The 1993 Sky Sports International Open was a snooker tournament of the 1992/93 season that was held from April 2 to 11 in the Plymouth Pavilions . The International Open was not able to continue for three and a half years, but this year it came back with a few changes around the tournament. The south-west English port city of Plymouth was the venue for a tournament of the professional tour for the first time and the television channel Sky Sports sponsored it for the first time. In addition, the tournament had always taken place early in the season, now it moved to the end of the season as the last tournament before the World Cup .
Little had changed with the top players. As in 1989 , the final was Steve Davis versus Stephen Hendry . This time Davis, who had won the last three editions in the 1980s, could not defend his title. Hendry retaliated with a 10-6 win for the previous defeat and took the title for the first time.
Main tournament
The composition of the first round had not changed compared to 1989. The top 32 of the world rankings were set, 32 players who had emerged from the qualification were drawn to them for the first round. Since the professional tournaments had meanwhile been released for all players, eight rounds were necessary to determine the 32 qualifiers with a record participation of 490 participants. The tournament mode remained the same until the semi-finals, but the final was extended: instead of Best of 17 , Best of 19 was played, i.e. until one of the players had won 10 frames.
