Tournament course
As in the previous year, at the International Open, which was regularly broadcast on TV from this edition as the first ranking tournament of the season, the sixteen best-placed players in the world rankings were placed directly for the main round and each met one of the sixteen in the round of the last 32 Qualifiers. Up to and including the quarter-finals, the knockout system was played in the best of 9 frames mode , followed by the semi-finals and the final in the best of 17 frames mode .
final
In the final, the reigning world champion and world numbering leader Steve Davis from England and the ex-world champion and world numbering leader Canadian Cliff Thorburn, two top players, who thanks to their world championship titles both had already won at least one world ranking tournament. Davis had made it to the semi-finals with sovereign victories over Eugene Hughes , Mike Watterson and Silvino Francisco and made the finals there with a clear 9-2 win over the Australian Eddie Charlton . His opponent Thorburn reached the semifinals with three more frames lost and wins over Eddie Sinclair , Dennis Taylor and Doug Mountjoy , where he knocked down Terry Griffiths from Welsh 9: 8 and thus in the decider .
Davis dominated the beginning of the match and took a 4-0 lead before Thorburn halved the deficit to 4-2. But Davis then restored his lead 6: 2 before Thorburn came up to 6: 3 and 7: 4. But with a 74:14 and a 77:14 Davis managed to win the last two missing frames, which he won the game and thus the tournament 9: 4.

qualification
As in the previous year, all players who were not in the top sixteen places in the world rankings or who were not placed had to qualify in advance. This qualification was played from September 3 to 11, 1983 in the best of 9 frames mode . In the first round, all players from 28th place and up and the unseeded players competed against each other in a total of 21 games, with the 21 winners then facing the remaining players outside the top sixteen ranks, whereby the sixteen qualifiers for the main round were determined.
