Leslie Anthony "Les" Dodd (born February 11, 1954 ) is an English former snooker player who was active as a professional player for a total of sixteen years between 1983 and 1999 and during this time has reached 36th place in the world rankings.

Career

Beginnings as an amateur

Dodd first drew attention to himself when he reached the quarter-finals of the Pontins Spring Open in 1980 with a white wash over the six-time world champion Ray Reardon , where he lost 4-1 to Cliff Wilson from Welsh . A year later he reached the semi-finals of the northern qualifying competition for the English Amateur Championship and lost to George Wood before he had to admit defeat to John Parrott in 1982 a round before . Shortly thereafter, for the 1982/83 season , Dodd finally became a professional player.

First professional years

After Dodd in 1982 as an amateur for Bass and Golden Leisure Classic had been invited and there against Paul Medati had lost his first match, he reached over the 1982/83 season both in the International Open and in the UK Championship and in the World Snooker Championship each the round of the last 32 and thus immediately the main round of the snooker world championship. On the world rankings, this meant a placement in 36th place, which remained his best world rankings throughout his career.

In the following season Dodd lost to the start at the International Open , the Professional Championship and the UK Championship, his opening games and later retired after qualifying at the International Masters in the group stage. In the two other ranking tournaments, Classic and Snooker World Championship , Dodd was able to win one game each before he was eliminated before the main round. Nevertheless, he lost only seven places in the world rankings and was thus led to 43rd place.

Also in the 1984/85 season Dodd lost with four games again several opening games, in contrast to which he reached the round of 32 at the English Professional Championship and lost in this with 1: 9 against Willie Thorne . Apart from that, he lost at the UK Championship after defeating Steve Newbury against his Welsh compatriot Cliff Wilson , after defeating the latter and previously Robby Foldvari at the International Open , where he lost to Ray Reardon in the round of 32 . Despite this success, Dodd lost another ten places on the world rankings.

Establishment in the top 70

In the 1985/86 season , Dodd was eliminated from most tournaments in the round of 64 or earlier and also lost several opening games. Only at the end of the season when qualifying for the main round of the Snooker World Championship was Dodd able to reach the final round with victories over Jack Fitzmaurice and Mike Watterson , in which he was defeated by the South African Perrie Mans with 7:10 . In spite of this result, he lost another fifteen places on the world rankings, making him 63rd.

In the next season he was able to improve his results significantly despite three defeats in the beginning. So he started the season with a participation in the round of the last 64 of the International Open , before he reached the round of 32 both at the Grand Prix with wins over George Scott and Kirk Stevens and at the Classic with wins over Paul Medati and Doug Mountjoy in which he was defeated by Mike Hallett and Cliff Wilson respectively . Shortly thereafter, he surprisingly reached the final of a professional tournament for the only time in the non-ranking English Professional Championship with victories over, among others, Tony Knowles , Mike Hallett and Joe Johnson , which he lost 5: 9 to Tony Meo . Through these improvements Dodd could increase on the world rankings by seventeen places to rank 51.

However, Dodds results stagnated again with the 1987/88 season , even if he reached the round of 32 at the English Professional Championship and apart from that only lost two opening games. However, he was eliminated from all other ranking tournaments in the round of the last 64, so that he was now ranked 62nd in the world.

Promotion to rank 40

Also in the 1988/89 season , Dodd was often eliminated from ranked tournaments in the round of 64 and also lost his opening game at the English Professional Championship . However, by means of victories over Mark Rowing , Murdo MacLeod and John Campbell, he reached the quarter-finals of the third WPBSA non-ranking event . Apart from that, he defeated Colin Roscoe and John Parrott at the International Open before losing to Barry West in the round of 32 , and ended the season with wins over Joe Grech and Glen Wilkinson and the associated move into the final qualifying round for the Snooker World Championship , in which he had to admit defeat to the Australian Eddie Charlton with 6:10. In the world rankings, however, he fell three places to 65th.

Likewise, Dodd was eliminated early several times in the following season , but in contrast, he began the season with a round of 16 participation at the Hong Kong Open , where he was defeated by Stephen Hendry . In addition, he reached the same round in the second event of the WPBSA non-ranking series and was previously defeated by Paul Gibson from England in the round of 32 at the Grand Prix . At the British Open he also moved into the quarter-finals with victories over Terry Whitthread , Warren King , Cliff Wilson , Mark Rowing and Tony Knowles , where he lost 3-5 to Englishman Steve James . All this meant a gain of twenty places in the world rankings, so that he was now led to 45th place.

With the 1990/91 season , the number of defeats in the round of the last 96 and in the round of the last 64 rose again to eight. Apart from that, he made it into the final qualifying round of the Snooker World Championship , where he was defeated by Steve Newbury 5:10 after he had already reached the round of 16 in the non-ranking tournament Benson and Hedges Satellite Championship and there after defeating Joe O ' Boye and Jonathan Birch had lost to Darren Morgan . Before that, however, he had already moved into the quarterfinals of the Asian Open by means of victories over Mike Darrington , Tony Knowles , John Virgo and Eddie Charlton , in which he was defeated 4: 5 by Mike Hallett . On the world rankings, he was able to improve by five places to 40th place.

Crash out and return to the top 50

But with the 1991/92 season at the latest , his results collapsed: In eleven tournaments he was only able to win his opening game five times, with four of the five tournaments being eliminated in the following round. Only in the Classic did he defeat two players, Guy Dennis and Tony Knowles , before losing to James Wattana from Thailand in the round of 32 . On the world rankings, he fell eighteen places to 58th.

In the following season , the number of winning opening games rose again to seven out of thirteen possible, whereby he was again able to win at least two games before elimination in only one tournament: At the Snooker World Cup , he defeated the Norwegian Bjørn L'Orange and the Scot Paul McPhillips each time in the decider , before he was able to qualify for the main round of the snooker world championship for the second time in ten years thanks to Eddie Charlton's abandonment without a fight . In this he was eliminated immediately because of a 5-10 defeat against Welsh Darren Morgan .

In the 1993/94 season Dodd was able to win only six opening games in thirteen tournaments again, with he again only came in a single tournament beyond the following round. This was again the case at the World Snooker Championship , in which they qualified again for the main round by means of victories over Craig Edwards , Nigel Gilbert and Doug Mountjoy and in this again - in this case with 9:10 against Steve James - immediately eliminated. Following this, Dodd was first invited to the Pontins Professional , but in which he also lost his opening game. In the world rankings, he was able to improve by twelve places to 46th place despite the defeats in the beginning.

Last professional years

In the 1994/95 season , Dodd could only win five opening games, with only at the Benson & Hedges Championship thanks to the non-fighting abandonment of Anthony Bishop and a subsequent victory over Gerard Greene survived more than a round. As a result, he slipped fifteen places on the world rankings to 58th place.

With the next season his results collapsed again when he could only win his opening game in the non-ranking tournament Merseyside Professional and lost to Rod Lawler after a total of three wins over insignificant players in the quarter-finals . Thus, he fell on the world rankings from 107th place.

In the 1996/97 season , his results stabilized again, despite numerous defeats at the beginning, when he reached the round of 96 three times and the round of 128 once more. His best season result was achieved right at the start of the Asian Classic , where he defeated Mike Hallett and lost in the round of 64 to Matthew Couch . At the end of the season he was placed 121st in the world rankings and also lost his professional status after 15 years.

In the following year he participated mostly unsuccessfully in the WPBSA Qualifying School and the UK Tour and also reached the second round in the Benson and Hedges Championship and in the qualification for the Snooker World Championship .

For the 1998/99 season Dodd returned for the last time on the professional tour. However, he was only able to win his opening games in five tournaments, so participating in the fourth qualifying round of the World Snooker Championship was his best result. There he played his last professional game against Darryn Walker , who defeated him 8:10, before ending his professional career on rank 174 of the rankings.

Further life

In the following years Dodd took part as an amateur in the qualifications for numerous professional tournaments, mostly the World Snooker Championship, with participation in the fourth qualifying round at the 2001 World Snooker Championship was his best result. In 2012 Dodd first took part in the World Seniors Championship , where he qualified for the round of 16 with wins over Andrew Milliard , Bill Oliver and Steve Meakin and lost to Cliff Thorburn . While he lost his opening game in the fifth qualifying round against Philip Williams the following year and his opening game in 2015 , he qualified for the round of the last 24 in 2016 and lost to Robert Milkins .

Apart from that, Dodd is the owner of The Les Dodd Snooker Center in Southport and also works as a snooker trainer.
