This was played up to and including the semifinals in the best of 9 frames mode, only in the semifinals and finals the mode was increased to best of 17 frames .
final
In the final, Joe Johnson and Tony Knowles, two English snooker players, both of whom had only become professional players in 1979, met. Knowles had fought his way to fourth in the world rankings by 1983, while Johnson was only 23rd. Both players had benefited from the early retirement of several top players such as Alex Higgins , Steve Davis and Dennis Taylor and many others.
Knowles started the match with three frames in a row and extended his lead to 1: 6 after Johnson won a frame. Johnson then won the next frame with a 135 break and came closer to his opponent at 4-6 and 5-7. After Knowles had briefly extended his lead to 5: 9, Johnson equalized to 8: 8 and thus forced the decider . However, this went to Knowles with 33:73, so that he won both the match and the tournament.
