final
At the very first Grand Prix in 1984 were Steve Davis and Dean Reynolds successive hit, in the quarterfinals won Davis 5: 0th He had been world number one since that season, while Reynolds had only worked his way into the top 16 this season. In addition, Davis had not only won the tournament in the same place the year before, three weeks earlier he had been the winner of the International Open . Reynolds had already reached a final at the British Open earlier in the year . Davis was the favorite, but it was surprising how much he dominated the final. He won the first frame to zero, in frames 2 and 3 Reynolds had his chances, but Davis also won them by a safe margin. And in the following three frames he won again clearly, twice with higher breaks of 52 and 82 points respectively. He didn't need any century breaks like he did in the semifinals, Reynolds only got 46 points in a frame. In the last three frames of the afternoon session, he only scored between 22 and 34 points and Davis won point by point. It was 9-0 before the evening and the game had long been decided. In the evening Reynolds would have had the chance to get an honor point, but the only game of the second session clearly went to Davis. The year before he had already won a final 9-0 at the Masters , but this was the first to zero victory, a "whitewash", in a ranking final and the first in a final with at least 10 winning frames in modern professional snooker. Reynolds quickly put up with the defeat, he managed his first victory over Davis in an invitation tournament only two months later and was facing the most successful period of his career. Davis, on the other hand, lost his number 1 position despite the win at the end of the season and it wasn't until 1992 that the dominant player of the last 7 years won a tournament again.
