The Pearl Assurance British Open 1990 was a snooker tournament of the 1989/90 season that took place from February 18 to March 4 in the Assembly Rooms in Derby . It was the sixth edition of the ranking tournament. Pearl insurance was the third sponsor in three years.
Tony Meo , last year's winner, did not get past the second round this time. With Bob Chaperon was after the debut tournament in 1985 a Canadian for the second time in the final. Unlike his compatriot Kirk Stevens , Chaperon won the title. He won against Alex Higgins 10-8 . This makes him one of two non-British who have won the British Open in the 21 years that the tournament has existed. For Chaperon it was the only individual victory on the professional tour.
Main tournament
The top 32 of the world rankings were set for the main tournament. The players from 33rd place played two qualifying rounds, which resulted in a further 32 players who were then drawn into the top 32. After the final was extended four years ago, it has been shortened significantly this year. Instead of 13 winning frames ( Best of 25 mode ), only 10 frames were needed to win (Best of 19). The other rounds remained unchanged.
