The 1998 British Open was a snooker tournament of the 1997/98 season that was held from April 2 to 12 in the Plymouth Pavilions . It was the 14th edition of the tournament, the 5th time it took place in the south-west English port city of Plymouth .
Defending champion Mark Williams lost in the semifinals to John Higgins . Last year's second finalist Stephen Hendry reached the final for the second time in a row. But he lost again. Higgins won just under 9: 8 and secured the title for the second time after 1995 . It was his third win this season.
Main tournament
After four qualifying rounds, in which the players from 33rd place in the world rankings had participated, 32 players were left. The top 32 were placed directly for the main tournament, the 32 qualifiers were drawn for the first round.
