Career

Beginnings

Wattana was born in 1970 in Khlong Toei , Bangkok. His snooker career began at the age of nine in one of his family's snooker clubs. It is said that he had to stand on a water box in order to play the balls properly. At the age of 14 he took part in the Asian Snooker Championship in 1984 , where he was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Henry Boteju . Also in the following year this round was over, in addition he was eliminated in the group stage of the amateur world championship 1985 . He also took part in his first Main Tour tournament: In the group stage of the Thailand Masters he drew against Willie Thorne and lost to eventual winner Dennis Taylor .

The 1986/87 season began for amateur Wattana by winning the 1986 Asian Snooker Championship against Gary Kwok . At the amateur world championship he was eliminated with five wins out of nine games in the group stage. But in August 1986 he caused a sensation: Wattana took part in the Thailand Masters again and was able to win his first round match against the one-time world champion Dennis Taylor . After two further defeats at the beginning, he finished the season at world number 88 .

In the 2017/18 season he was only able to win his first game at the English Open . He moved through victories over Martin O'Donnell , Ali Carter and Yuan Sijun into the round of 16, where he lost to Michael White . Again a series of defeats followed, which he only overcame at the snooker shoot-out 2018 . There he was able to defeat Zhang Anda before being eliminated by Mark Williams . At the Welsh Open he made it into the round of 32, where he was defeated by Kyren Wilson . After two more defeats, he finished the season in world number 86 .

In the 2018/19 season he received another Invitational Tour Card . At the 6-Red World Championship , he moved into the quarter-finals this time, where he lost to eventual finalist Ding Junhui . After three opening defeats in a row, he won his qualifier for the International Championship . There he lost in the main round 5-6 against Zhao Xintong .

Others

Wattana is held in high esteem in Thailand and has a diplomatic passport to travel to and participate in tournaments without any problems. He is enrolled in the Rushden Snooker Academy, where Peter Ebdon , Ding Junhui and the former German professional Lasse Münstermann also train.
