Event 7

The Warsaw Classic 2011 (Event 6 of the Players Tour Championship 2011/12 ) was a snooker tournament that took place from September 29th to October 2nd, 2011 in the Polish capital Warsaw . The venue was the Ursynów Arena on the southern outskirts of the city .

The tournament was the second PTC event of the season in mainland Europe. It was also the second event in this series of minor ranking tournaments to be televised. 163 participants signed up for the first professional snooker tournament on Polish soil, 39 of them from Poland, including the only Polish Main Tour professional Kacper Filipiak . Most of the professionals were represented in Warsaw, but with Mark Selby , Mark Williams , John Higgins and Ding Junhui the current top 4 of the world rankings were missing and with Ronnie O'Sullivan and Stephen Hendry two other prominent names.

The Australian Neil Robertson was thus the highest placed participant in the world rankings and used the absence of the top competition to win his first victory at a tournament of the Players Tour Championship with a 4-1 win in the final against Ricky Walden .

All games were played in best-of-7 mode.

Preliminary round

96 players were set for the main tournament, the remaining 67 players had to play in the qualification for the 32 free places. Three pairs had to go to the pre-qualification, the winners added the 32 pairings in which the main round participants were determined. All qualifying matches were played on Thursday, September 29th.

Finals

With the third round of the tournament, the main tournament began with 128 participants. Half of the seeding list played rounds 3 to 5 on Friday, September 30th, the other half was at the tables on Saturday, October 1st. The last four rounds from the round of 16 to the final were carried out on the final Sunday.

Most of the players had to fight their way through the tournament hard, six of the eight quarter-finalists had to make at least one decision. Neil Robertson won after a 4: 2 at the beginning three times in a row with 4: 3 and then managed again with 4: 3 the semi-finals against Shaun Murphy . Stephen Lee was one of the two players who made it into the round of 16 with some ease. He defeated the winner of the previous Event 5 Andrew Higginson with 4-1. The Chinese Xiao Guodong , who was the lowest-placed remaining player (61st place in the world rankings), he only defeated in the seventh frame.

Young player Jack Lisowski , who had reached the semifinals in the fifth event the week before, missed the repetition after a loss to old master Steve Davis . For him it was the best result of the season so far, although he had to play with a borrowed cue because his own had not arrived in Warsaw on time. Ricky Walden had only given up a single frame by the third to last lap. With the young star Judd Trump he had his first tough opponent and as the last of the remaining he had to go into the seventh frame before he could move into the semi-finals. There Steve Davis proved to be an equally stubborn opponent and demanded another 4: 3 from him. The opposite happened to Neil Robertson, who won clearly and convincingly for the first time in the semifinals and defeated Stephen Lee 4-0.

There were two players in the final, for whom participation in the final was the best PTC result to date. Robertson was able to build on the semi-final performance and took a 1-0 lead with a 76 break. He was able to counter the equalizer from Walden immediately and in the fourth frame he barely missed a century, which he led 3-1. In the fifth frame, Walden was able to take the lead with a 46 break. But it was not enough and Robertson was able to turn the game to a 4-1 victory. In all four frames won, the Australian had scored at least a break of 68 points. With his first PTC win, he was the sixth winner in the sixth event of the season.
