The Irish Open 1998 was a snooker tournament , which until 20 December 1998 in the 14th National Basketball Arena in Tallaght , a suburb of the Irish capital Dublin , was discharged and as a world ranking tournament part of the Main Tour - 1998-99 season was.

The Welshman Mark Williams won the tournament with a 9-4 victory in the final against the Scottish Alan McManus .

After this event, the tournament was removed from the Main Tour calendar and the Malta Grand Prix was given the status of the world ranking tournament. In April 2015, WPBSA Chairman Barry Hearn announced that the tournament will now take place in Belfast as the Northern Ireland Open as part of the newly founded Home Nations Series from the 2016/17 season . and together with the English Open , the Scottish Open and the Welsh Open will form the newly introduced Home Nations Series. The tournament moved from the Republic of Ireland to Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom .

The qualifying round took place from July 29th to September 3rd. From the 197 participants, the 32 players who took part in the main round held from December 14th to 20th, 1998 were determined in the knockout system .
