The Northern Ireland Trophy was the first professional snooker tournament in Northern Ireland .
history
As early as 1981 there was the Northern Ireland Classic in Northern Ireland , but it had nothing to do with this tournament.
In 2005 the tournament was reintroduced as the Northern Ireland Trophy , it was now held annually in the Waterfront Hall in Belfast. As in 1981, the 2005 tournament was an invitation-only tournament - so there was no qualification; it was held in the 2005/06 season with 20 participants. From the 2006/07 season it was a world ranking tournament with qualifying rounds. The top 32 in the world rankings now played against 16 qualifiers. The tournament was held for the last time in 2008.
