The Kent Cup was a tournament held in Beijing and sponsored by Kent and served four times as part of the professional tour . While the tournament was held in the 1986/87 and 1987/88 seasons as a tournament with large professional participation in the Beijing Indoor Stadium , it took place in the 1989/90 season without professional participation in Yuetan Gymnasium and in the 1990/91 season also without professional participation held at Yuetan Stadium . Each of the four editions was won by a different player, with Willie Thorne winning first, followed by John Parrott , before Marcus Campbell and Joe Swail won the next two editions. Even during the first edition of the tournament, Neal Foulds played the highest break in tournament history with a 134 break.

history

The first edition of the tournament took place as an invitation tournament - as part of the 1986/87 season - at the beginning of March 1987 in the Beijing Indoor Stadium . A total of eight professional players took part, all of whom were under contract with Matchroom Sport . Overall, there were a prize of 30,000 pounds to win that have been fully paid to the winner. Willie Thorne won the tournament in an all-English final with a 5-2 win over Jimmy White , while compatriot Neal Foulds played the highest break in the edition and at the same time in tournament history with a 134 break.

In the next season , the tournament was postponed a month and the tournament is now referred to as a "non-ranking tournament". In addition, the field of participants was supplemented by eight amateur players from China and Hong Kong , who each played against one of the eight professional players in the first round. With John Parrott and Martin Clark two Englishmen reached the final again, in which the later world champion Parrott was able to prevail with 5: 1 and thus won a good 30% of the total prize money pot of 115,000 pounds. In addition, he played the only Century Break of the tournament with a 107 break , but could not beat Foulds' previous year's record.

In the next few years the tournament took place regularly as an invitation tournament, but without professional participation. The editions of 1990 and 1991 were still part of the professional tour. While the former of the two editions was held as part of the 1989/90 season in mid-March 1990 at the Yuetan Gymnasium in Beijing, the latter edition took place in the following season at Yuetan Stadium . In the case of the first edition, only the results from the semi-finals are presumably handed down, with Marcus Campbell and Tom Finstad, a Scot and a Canadian, playing the final. Campbell prevailed 4-1, securing a good half of the £ 9,760 prize money. In the 1991 edition, ten amateurs from Europe and Asia took part in the tournament and began this with a group stage, the four best players of which made it to the semi-finals. Marcus Campbell reached the final again, but lost it 5-0 to Joe Swail from Northern Ireland .
