The Men of the Midlands was a professional snooker tournament that was held twice in the early 1970s and was held as an invitation-only group tournament. The two editions in 1972 and 1973 took place in different locations and were sponsored by M&B and won by Alex Higgins . Higgins played together with John Spencer in 1972 with a 69 break each, the highest known break in tournament history.
history
The first edition of the tournament took place in spring 1972 at different locations and was sponsored by M&B . The eight participants won a total of £ 825 in prize money and began the tournament, divided into two groups, with a simple round-robin tournament at the end of which two tables were set up. The four best players advanced to the semi-finals, from which the winner was determined in the knockout system . In the final, Alex Higgins and John Spencer met the players who had previously played a 69 break - the highest known break in tournament history. Higgins won the final 4-2.
The second edition followed in the spring of 1973, again sponsored by M & B and held at different locations. The prize money increased to £ 1,500, even if the number of participants was reduced to four players. The tournament started this time with a double round-robin tournament in one group, whereby the two best-placed players in the final table met in the final. These were again Alex Higgins and Ray Reardon ; Higgins was able to defend his title 5: 3. The tournament was then discontinued.
