The Welsh Open are a professional snooker tournament with the status of a world ranking tournament .
history
In 1992 the tournament was included in the world rankings. It replaced the Welsh Professional Championship , which had been held since 1980, but on which there were no world ranking points. The tournament was sponsored for twelve years by Regal , a tobacco brand from Imperial Tobacco .
It is held in Cardiff , Wales , at the beginning of the calendar year. The tournament took place in Newport between 1992 and 1998 and between 2005 and 2014 .
Most of the tournament wins at the Welsh Open went to the Scot John Higgins , who won his fifth victory in 2018.
The Welsh Open has been part of the Home Nations Series since the 2016/17 season , along with the Northern Ireland Open , Scottish Open and the English Open, which was founded in 2016 .
The winner's cup in honor of Ray Reardon has been called the Reardon Trophy since 2017 .
