Final round
32 players started in the main tournament: The winners of the qualification at the beginning of the month competed against the top 16 of the world rankings from January 23rd . While only two of the top players did not survive the opening round, both world champion Ronnie O'Sullivan and world number one Mark Williams ended in the round of 16. The conquerors of the two, Graeme Dott and Paul Hunter , met in the semi-finals, with the better end for last year's finalist from England. Last year's winner Ken Doherty also made it to the semi-finals with confidence and held the upper hand 6: 4 against world ranking neighbor Stephen Hendry .
final
For both players it was the third participation in the final at the 11th Welsh Open. Last year Ken Doherty had defeated Paul Hunter 9-2 in a one-sided final . This time it looked like it might be a straightforward matter for Hunter. After losing the opening frame, he won 5 frames in a row and led 5-1. But before the break between the sessions, his Irish opponent shortened to 3: 5. The start of the evening was mixed and after a 3-frame lead by the Englishman, Doherty came back to 6-7. But Hunter successfully fought against the equalizer and finally completed the 9: 7 win. This made him the fifth player to win the Welsh Open title for the second time.
