The 2006 Welsh Open was a snooker tournament of the 2005/06 season that was held from February 27 to March 5, 2006 at the Newport Center in the coastal town of Newport in South Wales.
Last year's winner Ronnie O'Sullivan was eliminated in the first round. Stephen Lee defeated the reigning world champion Shaun Murphy in the final and got his fourth victory in a world ranking tournament.
Prize money / world ranking points
The prize money remained unchanged compared to the previous year. However, since there were only 6 instead of 8 ranking tournaments this season, the number of points for the world ranking increased by up to 25%. However, that only applied to the round of 16 upwards. In the qualifying rounds nothing changed and in the last 32 the number of points even dropped by 50.

The Welsh Open was one of three tournaments in which 48 players started in the main tournament.
Round 1
As in previous years, three qualifying rounds had been played before the main tournament in Prestatyn . The fourth round was played as the opening round in Newport. The 16 qualifiers competed against the world ranking players from 17th to 32nd place.
Top 32 to the finalThe top 16 in the world were seeded for round 2. The winners from round 1 were drawn to them. kl. = without a fight finalStephen Lee was in the final of the Welsh Open for the second time after 2000 , for Shaun Murphy it was only the second final at a world ranking tournament after the successful world championship last year. Lee got off to an ideal start, winning the first four frames until the first break. But after the interruption, Murphy came up strongly and barely missed the compensation for the session break despite a 52 break in the eighth frame. In the evening session, the more experienced player defended his lead and then moved away with three frames in a row to make it 9: 6. Lee won the Welsh Open title for the first time and, after four years without a title, the fourth world rankings title of his career.
