Gary Wilson (born August 11, 1985 ) is an English snooker player from Wallsend . After showing some success as an amateur, he played on the Snooker Main Tour between 2004 and 2006 , but had to give up his place again due to lack of success. He returned in 2013.

Career

First professional years and amateur time

Wilson began his professional career as a worker in a frozen food factory and as a taxi driver . Gary Wilson first drew attention to himself at the 2003 U-19 European Championship in Latvia. A year later he won the title at the U21 World Cup . In the 2004/05 season he was then part of the professional tour for the first time . With success in qualifying for the China Open and the Irish Masters , where he advanced to the round of 48, he was able to secure another year on the Main Tour. The second year was not so successful and he lost his professional status again.

In the years to come Wilson fought repeatedly to return to the tour, but regularly failed at the PIOS and Q-School tournaments. In 2011 and 2012 he failed shortly before reaching the qualifier. In 2012 he reached the final of the amateur world championship , which he lost. He finally succeeded in re-qualifying for the Main Tour via the Players Tour Championship . In the 2012/13 season he collected enough points for third place in the amateur standings through consistent performance, although he never made it past the round of 16.

Second professional years

The snooker season 2013/14 started Gary Wilson with a win against James Wattana in qualifying for the 2013 Wuxi Classic . The modified tournament already marked his first appearance in the main round of a World Ranking tournament in the Round of 64. In the Bulgarian Open , he defeated the first PTC tournament of the season two top-24 player before he narrowly beat Barry Hawkins lost . At the Rotterdam Open he won against other top players and only failed in the semifinals against eventual winner Mark J. Williams . At the Zhengzhou Open and the Dongguan Open , he reached the quarter-finals. At the bigger tournaments he usually lost in round 1 or 2, but at the Indian Open he made it to the round of 16 and at the UK Championship he was one of the last 32. That put him in 68th place after just one year played.

In the second year , however, it took a long time to achieve the first successes. In qualifying for the German Masters 2014 , he achieved the 102nd maximum break in snooker history. However, he missed the main tournament. At the Welsh Open 2015 he reached the quarter-finals and defeated Neil Robertson , among others . With a win against defending champion Ding Junhui at the China Open 2015 , he then made it into the final of a ranking tournament for the first time in his career. He lost this with 2:10 against Mark Selby . In the world rankings he rose to the top 32 in July 2015. The 2015/16 snooker season was far less successful, however, and with the exception of the Bulgarian Open , where he reached the last 32, all ranked tournaments ended in round 2 at the latest, which is why he fell back again.

Also in the 2016/17 season , Wilson was often eliminated early, but reached the round of 32 at the Indian Open and the Northern Ireland Open and the round of 32 at the China Open and the World Snooker Championship, i.e. the first main round in the latter tournament. He had previously played his second maximum break in qualifying. The next season saw his first successes, Wilson lost three times in the round of 16 and reached the quarter-finals at the Paul Hunter Classic and the semi- finals at the Welsh Open , but retired early in the qualification at the 2018 World Snooker Championship .

Wilson was able to build on the successes of the previous season in the 2018/19 season by reaching the quarter-finals at the World Open and defeating the top 16 players Luca Brecel , Mark Selby and Ali Carter at the Snooker World Championship and only in the semi-finals later world champion Judd Trump was defeated. The following season he was eliminated from the International Championship and the World Grand Prix in the quarter-finals and at the 6-Red World Championship and the European Masters in the semifinals. As a result, he temporarily occupied 18th place in the world rankings.
