The China Open 2017 is a snooker tournament as part of the Snooker Main Tour in the snooker season 2016/17 , which was held from March 27 to April 2 at the Beijing University Students' Gymnasium in the Haidian district of the Chinese capital Beijing .

The defending champion was the Englishman Judd Trump , who surprisingly lost in the quarter-finals to the Iranian Hossein Vafaei . Before that, he had the third maximum break of his career and thus the highest tournament break . The world champion and world number one Mark Selby won the tournament with a 10: 8 victory over the Welshman Mark Williams . It was his second China Open victory after 2015 .

Prize money

The premiums remained unchanged compared to the previous year.

Prize money
winner £ 85,000
finalist £ 35,000
Semi-finalist £ 21,000
Quarter finalist £ 12,500
Round of 16 £ 8,000
Last 32 £ 6,500
Last 64 £ 4,000
Highest break £ 2,000
All in all £ 510,000
Jackpot bonus at the
Maximum break £ 30,000

The bonus for a maximum break results from the " Rolling 147 Prize ": It starts with £ 5000 and is increased by £ 5000 for the following ranking tournament as long as no maximum break has been played. The bonus was £ 30,000 because no maximum break was played at the 2017 Players Championship . As he was the only one in the tournament to get a maximum break, Judd Trump took the jackpot in addition to the £ 2,000 for the highest break.

Wildcard round

The wildcard round games took place on March 27th. The game mode was best-of-9 .

Final round

The biggest surprise of the opening round was the 5-2 victory of Iranian Hossein Vafaei over the world number 11. Joe Perry . Number 12 Liang Wenbo also lost his first game against Rory McLeod . The two surprise winners played against each other in the round of 16, Vafaei won. He then met Judd Trump . The 22-year-old defeated the defending champions and winner of the Players Championship, which had ended two weeks earlier, 5-3 and made it to a semi-finals for the first time in his career. In the 1: 6 against Mark Williams he had no chance, but he still improved to 64th place in the world rankings. The Welshman had reached the semi-finals by winning against John Higgins and Shaun Murphy .

The surprise of the second round was the defeat of Ronnie O'Sullivan against Mark Joyce , but the victory brought him no luck for the round of 16. In the lower half of the tournament tree was particularly impressed Kyren Wilson , who with Stuart Bingham and Ding Junhui switched off two top-five players. It was only in the semifinals that he was stopped by Mark Selby . The world number one had come through the tournament with clear successes except for the 5: 4 in the round of 16 against Andrew Higginson .

final

The three-time China Open winner Mark Williams was not only a record winner, but also a record finalist with his fifth final. But Mark Selby was also in the final for the fourth time in Beijing. Conversely, it was the first final of the season for Williams, while Selby had already won three titles and was in the final for the fifth time. Selby had the better start with two century breaks until the first break, but Williams held up with a century and never let the world champion pull away more than two frames. With another Century, he came up to 4: 5 at the end of the afternoon session. In the evening, the Welshman equalized and took the lead at 7: 6 for the first time, but until 8: 8 none of the players had a decisive advantage. Selby then secured the point to 9: 8 with his third Century and won after a hard-fought 18th frame with 10: 8.
