Sanderson Lam (born January 28, 1994 ) is an English snooker player of Chinese descent.
Career
Sanderson Lam is from Leeds. He grew up in a snooker-loving family and, in his youth, repeatedly measured himself against his older brothers Gene and Gordon at tournament level. He played in the English youth team and was one of the best of his class in England. He had his greatest success at the 2010 English Junior Championship, where he reached both the U-16 and U-19 finals.
The following season, Lam also took part in the Players Tour Championship , a tournament series for professionals and amateurs. In the first three tournaments in England he lost the opening match, but at the Paul Hunter Classic in Fürth he qualified for the main tournament with two wins in the amateur round, where he lost to fifth in the world rankings Mark Williams . In the following year he also took part in four PTC tournaments and won a qualifying game. Following the end of the season, he tried to qualify for a place on the Snooker Main Tour through the Q School . At the first tournament he reached the semi-finals of his group and lost to Elliot Slessor , who then made the qualification perfect. In the other two tournaments he reached the quarterfinals.
In the 2013/14 Main Tour season , he was then allowed to take part in the qualifying rounds for the professional tournaments as an amateur several times. This gave him the opportunity to compete against many professional players. At the World Open he managed to beat Dave Harold . It was his first tournament victory over a professional and he thus achieved his first participation in a full professional tournament. However, he lost in the wildcard round of the tournament held in China and missed the final round. He also took part in all eight tournaments of the Players Tour Championship this season and made it into the main round at the Ruhr Open and the Antwerp Open . The Q School was disappointing after that with early defeats in the two qualifying tournaments.
In the following year he was able to improve further in the PTC tournaments and come under the last 128 in all five participations. He also qualified for the play-offs on the EBSA Qualifying Tour , which took place parallel to several PTC tournaments . There he was able to prevail among the 16 participants and win one of the two Main Tour places. With this, at the age of 21 he received professional status and the right to participate in the professional tournaments of the following two seasons.
In his first tournament, qualifying for the Australian Open , he immediately won his first victory. After that he was almost only successful in PTC tournaments. Only at the International Championship 2015 did he qualify for the main tournament and even a first round win in Daqing against Michael Wild 6-0, even if he then retired in the round of 32 with the same result. At the beginning of his second season he was 77th in the world rankings.
