2012

The Paul Hunter Classic 2011 (Event 4 of the Players Tour Championship 2011/12 ) was a snooker tournament that took place from August 25 to 28, 2011 in Fürth and Nuremberg . As in the previous year, it was an official ranking tournament of the Main Tour and thus part of the 2011/12 snooker season . For the first time, Eurosport broadcast the games from table 1 live in the separate interior, which can hold around 500 spectators, during the three main days. It was the first time ever that one of the 12 individual tournaments of the Players Tour was broadcast on television. As in previous years, the game was played at a total of 10 tables in the Fürth town hall.

Due to the high number of participants - a total of 244 - the preliminary round was held not only in the town hall but also in the new billiards center of the organizing SSC Fürth in Nuremberg with free entry. In addition, a wildcard tournament for amateur players from continental Europe took place parallel to the Paul Hunter Classic , in which they could qualify for the wildcard round of the German Masters 2012 .

The defending champion was the Englishman Judd Trump . Ronnie O'Sullivan made his debut in Fürth after being canceled at short notice last year. With his maximum break in the third round, the first in the history of the Paul Hunter Classic, he achieved one of the highlights of the tournament.

Only four Main Tour players did not register for the tournament from the start: Stephen Maguire , Jamie Burnett , Andy Hicks and Igor Figueiredo . Björn Haneveer's non-participation - who was registered but had to cancel due to a shoulder injury - was also certain before the start of the tournament. In the course of the tournament, Allister Carter , Graeme Dott , Tony Drago , Liam Highfield , Robin Hull , Joe Meara , Lucky Vatnani and Liang Wenbo also canceled their participation for various reasons. Stuart Bingham , who had previously won the Australian Goldfields Open , became a father during the tournament days and was also absent.

Finals

The most prominent German players Lasse Münstermann and Patrick Einsle did not make it into the main tournament, but with Stefan Joachim, Christof Biniarsch and the German-Englishman Phil Barnes, three German representatives were in the first round. However, they were all subject to strong opponents there.

Passakorn Suwannawat in the quarterfinals

The biggest surprise of the first three laps came from Passakorn Suwannawat . The heavyweight Thai, who made his second attempt on the Main Tour this season, defeated world number one Mark Williams and was able to confirm the performance with a win over Ken Doherty . Then he also won his round of 16 against Jamie Jones . The confidently started ex-world champion Neil Robertson won another round of 16 against a strong Mark Joyce . The Englishman Joyce had previously prevailed in one of the most dramatic games against his compatriot Mark King . King had already caught up with two snookers in the decisive seventh frame and looked like the sure winner when the game ball slipped into his center pocket while sinking the penultimate pink ball.

Mark Davis , who had recently approached the top 16 in the world rankings , also played convincingly . In each case 4: 2 he defeated Jimmy White , Jamie Cope and in the round of 16 Matthew Selt . There was a surprising round of 16 between the Welshman Michael White , who sent the two-time PHC winner Shaun Murphy home early, and the Irish Fergal O'Brien , who had fought his way through Ding Junhui . In a direct comparison, the Irish got the upper hand. The most sovereign player in the round of 16 was world number third Mark Selby , who had not given a single frame until then. Even Andrew Higginson , the defending champion, after all previously Judd Trump had eliminated, then he left no frame. PTC specialist Joe Jogia had made it back to the round of 16 against top 16 player Mark Allen , where Stephen Lee was his final destination.

Ronnie O'Sullivan's first appearance in Fürth , which was always accompanied by enthusiasm, was very successful. Like Selby, he didn't make a frame until the round of 16. In addition, he managed a much acclaimed maximum break in lap 3 in front of the cameras . It was the eleventh of his career and the 78th official maximum break in snooker history. After sharing first place on the list of players with the most maximum breaks with Stephen Hendry for six months , he was again the sole leader in this statistic. Li Yan , who had previously defeated world champion and world number two John Higgins , was only able to resist the popular Englishman at 2: 4 in the next round. The only one of the numerous Chinese who survived the round of 16 was Yu Delu with relatively unspectacular victories over Steve Davis and Jimmy Robertson .

In the quarterfinals, the tournament surprise Passakorn Suwannawat was clearly defeated by Australian Neil Robertson with 1: 4, surprisingly clear Mark Davis beat Fergal O'Brien with 4: 0. Without the really big breaks, but with great confidence, especially with the long entry balls, the Englishman then prevailed against Robertson, who made too many mistakes, and reached his first PTC final. In the other half of the tournament tree, Selby made his first frame against Stephen Lee, but otherwise had few problems. O'Sullivan, on the other hand, showed weaknesses for the first time and Yu Delu forced the decisive frame, which the Englishman won convincingly. So it came to the early final of the tournament's best players up to then. In addition, O'Sullivan led in the ranking of the PTC tournaments this season, Selby was on the way to number one in the preliminary world rankings. In the high-class match "Ronnie" was already leading 2: 0 and 3: 1, but the fighter Selby, known for his strong nerves, was able to turn the game 4: 3.

So there were two marks in the final, which turned out to be one of the shortest finals in tournament history. After a quick lead, Selby pulled his compatriot in the second frame, when he was able to convert his 70-0 lead into a 73:70 victory. In the next two frames, too, he relentlessly exploited Davis's mistakes and inaccuracies and won 4-0. With the 2000 world ranking points for the tournament victory, Selby moved up to 2nd place (+1) in the preliminary ranking, the defeated Mark Davis brought the additional 1600 points to 15th place (+4).
