Anthony Knowles (born June 13, 1955 in Bolton, Greater Manchester ) is an English snooker player .

Life

Knowles started snooker at the age of nine at the Gentlemen's Club , which was run by his father. In 1972 and 1974 Tony Knowles won the UK Junior Championship . He began studying graphic design , which he dropped out to become a professional snooker player in 1979.

Knowles didn't win a single game in his first year as a professional. A first success was the qualification for the World Cup in 1981. In the 1981/82 season he reached the quarter-finals of both the UK Championship and the World Cup. He defeated defending champion Steve Davis 10: 1 in the first main round of the World Cup . Tony Knowles then moved into the top 16 of the world rankings for the first time .

In the 1982/83 season, Knowles won the International Open, a newly introduced ranking tournament . At the World Cup he failed in the semifinals with 15:16 to Cliff Thorburn . In 1983/84 he won his second rankings title at the Professional Players Tournament and climbed to position 2 in the world rankings behind Steve Davis.

Knowles made it to the semi-finals of the World Cup two more times, in 1985 and 1986. He stayed in the top 16 until 1990. In 1997 he lost his place on the Snooker Main Tour .
