The Jameson Whiskey International Open 1982 were a professional snooker world ranking tournament for the 1982/83 season . The tournament was held from September 27 to October 10, 1982 in the Assembly Rooms of the English city of Derby . Tony Knowles won the all-English final , who defeated David Taylor 9: 6 in the final. The highest break of the tournament was played by Welshman Cliff Wilson with a break of 126.

The tournament was again sponsored by the Irish whiskey brand Jameson , with the prize money increasing by a good £ 10,000 to £ 73,500 compared to the first edition of the tournament the year before , of which a good 30% went to the winner.

Tournament course
The sixteen best-placed players in the world rankings were set for the main round and met one of the sixteen qualifiers there. In the knockout system , the game was played in the best of 9 frames mode from the round of the last 32 up to and including the quarter-finals , followed by the semi-finals and final in the best of 17 frames mode .
final
In the final, the two English players Tony Knowles and David Taylor met each other, who both reached the final of a ranking tournament for the first time in their careers thanks to the early elimination of most of the top players. Knowles started with a victory over the unseen Scots Eddie Sinclair before he defeated the world number leader Ray Reardon and then his childhood friend Cliff Wilson . In the semifinals he then managed to get into the finals with a sovereign 9: 3 victory over the Canadian Kirk Stevens , at this point the number six in the world, the best-placed player in the tournament. Taylor had also defeated an unseeded player with Mick Fisher at the start and subsequently defeated number nine with Bill Werbeniuk and number four with Steve Davis . In the semifinals he met the Englishman John Virgo , against whom he won 9: 5 and thus reached the final.
The beginning of the game was even when both players each played a higher break and after four frames it was 2-2. After that, however, Knowles was able to take the lead 5: 2 thanks to two high frame results and a 93 break before Taylor came up to 6: 5 despite a century break from Knowles. However, Knowles won the following two frames, so that Taylor managed only one frame win to 8: 6 before Knowles won the game 9: 6 with an 82: 0 in the following frame.

In the first round, all unseeded players and the four worst-seeded players competed, with the winners of the 21 games then facing the participating players in the world rankings 17 to 28.
