final
The 1979 World Cup finalist and Northern Irishman Dennis Taylor had made it to the finals with a relatively clear 1: 9 victory over Englishman Dave Martin . He met the reigning world champion Steve Davis , who had it in the semifinals with Alex Higgins , who had already become world champion in 1972 and was again in 1982, much more difficult than his almost nine years older competitor, because Davis had only defeated Higgins in the decider .
But the final was surprisingly clear. Davis won all nine necessary frames in a row, mostly with clear results through high breaks (including two Centuries), and thus won the first edition of the tournament. It was the second final meeting for the two players after the Classic 1980 , and more, including the legendary 1985 World Cup final, were to follow.

qualification
The qualification took place between August 13 and 20, 1981. In the first round, 29 unsettled players and one amateur player faced each other. The 15 winners and Maurice Parkin , who was also unseed , played eight other winners in round two. In the following three rounds - with the exception of the top eight - the remaining field of participants was added, so that in the end eight qualifiers were certain.
