Ray Edmonds (born April 25, 1936 in Grimsby ) is a former English snooker and English billiards player. Edmonds has achieved success in both sports and was a professional snooker player for nineteen years between 1978 and 1997.

Career

Beginnings as an amateur

Edmonds was born in Grimsby on April 25, 1936 . During his time as an amateur, Edmonds won numerous local titles as well as the CIU Championship several times . He gained national attention in 1961 when he defeated Mario Berni and Marcus Owen , among others, at the English Amateur Championship , made it to the finals and lost to Allan Barnett 9:11 . A year later he was defeated in the quarterfinals by John Price , and in 1963 in the final of the North Qualification against Gary Owen . After he was eliminated early in 1964, he did not participate in the tournament in the following years. He did not return until 1969 and reached the final of the tournament for the second time, which this time he won 11: 6 against Jonathan Barron . Two years later he lost to Doug French in the final of the North Qualifiers . A year later, after victories over Dennis Taylor and John Virgo , he defeated Sid Hood in the same place , but then lost to Jonathan Barron in the championship final.

In 1973 he qualified with a victory over John Virgo for the final, but lost in this with Marcus Owen. A short time later he took part in the amateur world championship , survived the main and semi-final group stages with only two defeats, qualified for the final with a victory over Jonathan Barron and defeated the South African Mannie Francisco in this extremely narrow 11:10 . In the same year he was able to participate in the professional tournament Norwich Union Open , in which he lost in the quarterfinals to John Spencer . A year later he defeated Doug French in the final of the qualification of the English Amateur Championship and then secured his second championship title with a victory over the Irishman Patsy Fagan . Also in 1974 Edmonds again reached the final of an amateur world championship and won in this 11: 9 against Geoff Thomas . He also took part in the Watney Open and the Norwich Union Open without much success . 1975 followed an early defeat in the English championship.

In 1976 he was defeated in the English championship in the qualifying semifinals John Virgo , before he lost in the same year in the quarterfinals of the amateur world championship to Paul Mifsud and in 1977 at the English championship in the second round of qualification Paul Medati . In 1978 he took part in the championship for the last time, defeated Tony Knowles and had to admit defeat in the semi-finals of the qualification Ian Williamson . In the same year he became a professional player.

First professional years in snooker

In his first professional season, the season 1978/79 , Edmonds took part in three tournaments, but lost each of his opening game. The next season Edmonds won his first professional games, eliminating the British Gold Cup in qualifying and the World Snooker Championship in the round of 24 and reached the quarter-finals of the UK Championship . However, since the UK Championship had no influence on the world rankings, he narrowly missed the corresponding round at the World Snooker Championship and only from 1982 did other tournaments gradually influence the world rankings in addition to the World Cup, he remained unset on this after these two seasons.

In the 1980/81 season Edmonds lost his opening game at the UK Championship , but moved into the round of the last 24 at the World Snooker Championship and the main group stage at the Yamaha Organs Trophy , in which he was eliminated. At the English Professional Championship he defeated Mike Hallett , Fred Davis and Joe Johnson before losing 9-0 to Steve Davis in the semi-finals of the tournament . At the end of the season he was on the world rankings for the first time, more precisely on rank 28.

During the following season , however, Edmonds lost in three tournaments in the first two rounds. At the International Masters , however, he showed a better performance and moved into the semi-final group stage, in which he was eliminated despite a victory over Dennis Taylor . At the end of the season he defeated at the Bass and Golden Leisure Classic Clive Everton , Paul Medati and Mike Hallett, which he moved into the final, but there was defeated 1: 4 Rex Williams . At the end of the season he lost his world rankings again.

Establishment on the ranking list

During the 1982/83 season Edmonds was eliminated from three tournaments in the first round, but reached the round of 48 at the World Snooker Championship and the round of 32 at the International Open . In the world rankings, he placed himself as a result of the season 34. Also in the 1983/84 season Edmonds lost three times in the first round, but was eliminated from the Classic and the World Snooker Championship only in the second round and again reached the round of 32 at the International Open . Nevertheless, he deteriorated Rank 50.

In the 1984/85 season , Edmonds suffered four opening defeats, but was only eliminated from the British Open in the round of 64, the Classic in the round of 48 and the World Snooker Championship in the round of 32. Nevertheless, he lost another place in the world rankings. Far from snooker, Edmonds reached the final of the English Billiards World Championship in 1985 , defeating Norman Dagley 3-1. With his title at the English Billiards World Cup, he is the only player who was able to win both this title and at least one title at both the Amateur Snooker World Cup.

During the following season , Edmond's form continued to improve and he only lost three opening games. He also reached the round of 64 at the UK Championship, the round of 32 at the Grand Prix and World Snooker Championship and the round of 16 at the English Professional Championship . In the world rankings he improved to 46th place.

Farewell to the top 64

During the 1986/87 season Edmonds retired from three tournaments in the first and second round for him. Only in the Snooker World Championship did he reach his third round with wins over Steve James and Eddie Sinclair , the round of the last 48, in which he was eliminated by Murdo MacLeod . He lost thirteen places on the world rankings. In the next season he lost four opening games, eliminated at the Classic in the last round, but also at the Grand Prix and the UK Championship in the round of 32. This enabled him to improve by five places on the world rankings.

During the 1988/89 season Edmonds retired four times in the first and second round for him. On the other hand, he achieved success at the Grand Prix , when he reached the round of 16 with a victory over John Parrott and lost to Rex Williams there . In the world rankings he improved to 49th place. In the following season , however, he only reached the round of the last 64 in four out of ten tournaments, in which he was eliminated. As a result, he slipped to 72nd place.

Last professional years

As in previous years, Edmonds rarely reached a higher game than the third round of a tournament for him in the 1990/91 season . This season this was only the case at the Dubai Classic , the UK Championship and the World Snooker Championship . In the first two tournaments he was eliminated after winning two games in the round of 64, while at the World Cup after three wins in the round of 48. In the world rankings, he slipped to 95th place. In the next season he won only three opening games and was eliminated from the Asian Open in the round of 96 and both the Classic and the Strachan Open in the round of 64. On the world rankings, he lost further places, now he was ranked 111th.

In the 1992/93 season won at least one game in four of nine tournaments, but was eliminated in the subsequent round. It was the last season that I played in more than one tournament. On the world rankings, he slipped to 134th. In the following two seasons 1993/94 and 1994/95 Edmonds only took part in the World Snooker Championship, where he lost his opening game in both cases. On the world rankings, he fell from 241th to 500th. As a result, he did not play a single game until he ended his professional career after nineteen years at the end of the 1996/97 season.

In 1983 Edmonds opened the Ray Edmonds Snooker Center in Grimsby . The Snooker Center is, among other things, the training location of the English player Jamie Curtis-Barrett . Apart from that, he appeared as a TV commentator for ITV and the British Broadcasting Corporation until 2004 . In 2004 he also handed over the management of his snooker club to his son Alan.
