English Amateur Championship
The English Amateur Championship (dt .: British Amateur Championship ) is a snooker tournament , which by the EASB ( English Association of Snooker and Billiards is played). The amateur nature of the tournament excludes active members of the WPBSA ( World Professional Billiards & Snooker Association ).
It is the oldest and longest-running snooker tournament in the world.
history
The tournament was the first time in 1916 Orme's Hall in London District Soho discharged; at that time still under the name Amateur Snooker Championship , initiated by Harry Hardy . It was given the addition of English in 1921. The name is misleading, however, as Scottish, Welsh, Northern Irish and Irish players are also allowed to participate.
The final results for the years 1916–1920 have not been passed down. Until 1926 the final was decided on the basis of the accumulated points from seven frames . Then the mode, which is still common today, was changed, in which a certain number of frames must be obtained. WL Crompton scored the first series of over 50 points with a break of 62 in 1925.
After the Second World War, the number of participants increased, which is why regional qualifications were introduced: There is a southern English and a northern English champions, who then compete against each other in the entire English final. A total of five winners of the tournament later became professional world champions: John Pulman , Ray Reardon , John Spencer , Terry Griffiths and Stuart Bingham . Three other later world champions ( Joe Johnson , John Parrott and Ronnie O'Sullivan ) lost in the final, with O'Sullivan achieving a maximum break in 1991 during the tournament .
The youngest winner of the tournament in 2003 was Alex Davies at the age of 15 years and 10 months. In 2020, the 100th edition was held, which Ben Hancorn won.
