Indian Snooker Championship

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Indian Snooker Championship is a national competition that has been held since 1939 to determine the Indian champion of the snooker billiards discipline . After the first event in the early 1930s, more and more competitions were added from 1977, so that there are currently eight different championships.

history

Men

Main tournament

The first documented event was dated 1939, but there was probably an Indian snooker championship before that. PK Deb won three of the four events by 1942, and was in the final again. After a break through the Second World War , TA Selvaraj and Wilson Jones dominated the tournament until the 1950s, both players winning a total of nine titles. There were also two Englishmen, Frank Edwards and Leslie Driffield , who won the Tjrnier. In the 1950s, Chandra Hirjee was in the final every year between 1952 and 1958 , but he never won. In the mid-1950s, Mohammed Lafir from Ceylon won, and he won eight titles up until the 1970s. In the 1960s, however, Shyam Shroff dominated the competition, winning a total of seven times. After Lafir's return to the podium and the triple winner Arvind Davur , the Englishman Jimmy White won in 1980 , who was to be in the final of a snooker world championship only two years later . In the following decade it was Geet Sethi who dominated the decade with four championships won.

The best players of the 1990s include Yasin Merchant and Alok Kumar , who won the championship three and four times respectively by 2003. In 2003, Pankaj Advani, a future professional on the Main Tour, won, but he was to remain an amateur into the new decade. After two championships won by Alok Kumar, Manan Chandra , who had previously won the U21 championship several times, won. In January 2007 Alok Kumar won for the last time in his career, followed by Pankaj Advani for four years. In 2011 and 2012, Aditya Mehta won , who would also later become a professional on the Main Tour. After Manan Chandra's second title win, Advani was able to win three of the four championships up to and including 2017, and Mehta won in 2016. In 2018, Sumit Talwar, a newcomer, won the 85th edition of the men's snooker championship. After Pankaj Advani won his ninth title in 2019, Aditya Mehta won for the fourth time in 2020.

Juniors (U21)

A U21 championship for men was held from the mid-1970s. The first recorded winner was Manan Chandra , who won three titles between 1997 and 2001. He was followed twice by Pankaj Advani , Aditya Mehta in 2006 and Rishab Pantya and Shrava Mohta in 2007 , until Shahbaz Khan won his first title in 2008. In the following year he was able to defend it and he won it again in 2010, but it was subsequently disqualified and the title stripped. Instead, the winner was Zubin Leninwala . In 2012 Laxman Rawat won , the following year the title went to Malkeet Singh , who was in the final of the men's championship in 2018. He was followed by Ashutosh Padhy and Avinash Kumar , until Srikrishna Suryanarayanan won a multiple U17 champion in 2018 . With Shoaib Khan and Digvijay Kadian , former U17 champions followed in the next two years.

Sub-Juniors (U17)

The first event took place in 2006, the first known winner is Shravan Mohta , who became U21 champion a year later. Shoaib Khan won in December 2007, followed by Dhvaj Haria , who won three titles every two years until 2012. In 2013 and 2014, Ashutosh Padhy won , who was also U21 champion in 2014. After Ishpreet Chadha won in 2015 , Srikrishna Suryanarayanan won the next three editions. In 2019, Digvijay Kadian won , who lost to Kreishh Gurbaxani in the 2020 final .

Women

Main tournament

The first women's championship was held in 1989, but in 1997 it was only held irregularly. In the early years it was primarily Judy Walia , Pooja Galundia and Heena Khandelwal who won the championships. From 2003 Vidya Pillai dominated the tournament, she won a total of nine times by 2016. She was followed by Amee Kamani , who won her third league title in 2018 after 2015 and 2017. After the former junior champion Varshaa Sanjeev won the title in 2019 , Vidya Pillai won her 10th title in 2020.

Juniors (U21)

The first U21 championship for women took place at the same time as the first U17 championship in 2008. The first two editions were won by Arantxa Sanchis , and the subsequent Varsha Sanjeev also won two competitions. In 2013 Keerath Bhandaal won , who kept her title in 2014 as a new edition was not held due to too few participants. In 2015 Doyel Dey won , followed by Bhandaal, who was able to defend her title in 2017. In 2018, Ishika Shah won , followed by Anupama Ramachandran and Keerthana Pandian .

Sub-Juniors (U17)

At the same time as the first U21 championship, the first U17 championship was held in 2008 and Arantxa Sanchis won the U21 championship . The next five issues each went twice to Keerathz Bhandaal and Varsha Sanjeev and once to Lahari Itlapuram , until Doyel Dey won in 2015 . Dey was followed by three different winners over the next three years, first Ishika Shah , then Anupama Ramachandran . Keerthana Pandian won in 2018 and 2020 , whose winning streak was only interrupted by Ishika Shah.
