Australian Snooker Championship

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The National Australian Snooker Championship ( Australian National Snooker Championship ) is a competition to determine the national champion title in the billiards variant snooker in Australia .

history

While there was a national championship in English Billiards as early as 1906, a title in snooker was not played nationwide until 1953. In the state of South Australia , however, the first snooker championship was held in 1924. A number of players won the title in both disciplines ( Bob Marshall , Max Williams, Robby Foldvari , David Collins, Steve Mifsud , Matthew Bolton ).

Since only amateurs are eligible, some of the best-known Australian players such as Horace Lindrum , Eddie Charlton and Neil Robertson are not represented at all or only with a few titles from their amateur days. The tournament is not to be confused with the Australian Open Snooker Championship and the Australian Professional Championship or the Australian Goldfields Open , which are tournaments with the participation of foreign players or professional players.

Record titleholders are Max Williams and Steve Mifsud, each with 8 championships.

Women have played a national championship since 1975. Kathy Parashis is the most successful participant here: in 1992 she won her 1st and 2012 her 9th title. She made it to the finals 8 times in a row in the 1990s. Fran Lovis was successful 5 times in a row (1975 to 1979) and 6 times in total.

Junior competitions have existed since 1979. After the U-18 competition, other age groups were gradually introduced.

Some titleholders are also family members. James Mifsud first won the men's competition in 2016 after his older brother Steve had been successful 7 times between 2001 and 2013. Stan Gorski won the first title for the Gorski family in 1989, winning three times in total. His wife Margaret even had 5 wins between 1991 and 2009.

Title holder

The following table shows the titleholders from 1953 or from the introduction of the respective class. In the case of multiple winners among women and seniors, the superscript number for the first victory indicates the total number of titles won in this class.

1Before Barrie emigrated from Scotland to Australia, he was able to win the Scottish U18 championship there in 1946 and 1947 and the men 's championship in 1956 .
2 Since both players had won five games and lost one after the group stage, a playoff for the championship title was played
3After Kevin Burles passed away during the tournament and three games had not yet been played, John Campbell was declared the winner.
