Adrian Ridley (born September 11, 1982 ) is an Australian snooker player who won the Australian Snooker Championship in 2017 and the Snookero Ocean Championship in 2018 .

Career

First years as an amateur player

As a twenty-year-old, Ridley, who comes from Yarrawonga in the state of Victoria , took part in the amateur world championship as an amateur in 2002 , survived the group stage without defeat and, among other things, with a victory over Jamie Jones and finally reached the round of 16, in which he was barely 4-5 lost to James Mifsud . In the next two years he tried in vain to qualify for the professional tour via the Challenge Tour and lost both his opening game and a pre-qualification round of the World Snooker Championship .

Finally, he took part in the Australian Snooker Championship for the first time in 2005 and reached the semifinals. A year later he also took part in the Oceania Championship for the first time and reached the semi-finals with victories over Vinnie Calabrese and Matthew Bolton , where he lost to New Zealander Dene O'Kane . While he was eliminated in the Australian Snooker Championship in 2007 in the quarterfinals against Glen Wilkinson and in 2008 in the round of 16 against Shawn Budd , he lost in the same year at the Oceania Championship in the round of 32 against Chris McBreen .

Establishment in amateur snooker

After a break of several years, Ridley participated again in the Oceania Championship in 2012 and moved into the semifinals, in which he narrowly lost to James Mifsud 4: 5 . In the same year he tried to qualify for the professional tour through the Q School . In addition to two early defeats, he reached the final of his group as part of the first event with victories over Jeff Cundy and Fraser Patrick , but lost 4-1 to Martin O'Donnell . A year later he moved into the quarter-finals of the Oceania Championship and lost to Steve Mifsud , while he was invited as an amateur to the 6-Red World Championship , but was eliminated there with only one win over Kristján Helgason in the group stage. Previously he had reached the semi-finals at the amateur world championship in 6-red snooker and lost there to Michael Judge .

In 2014 he also took part in these two tournaments. While he reached the semi-finals at the Oceania Championship and had to admit defeat there Charlie Chafe, he was eliminated from the 6-Red World Championship despite a victory over John Higgins in the group stage. In the same, he survived the group stage at the amateur world championship and later moved into the quarter-finals, before taking off against Zhao Xintong in this round . In 2015 he first reached the quarter-finals of the Oceania Championship and lost to Ben Judge , while he reached the main round for the first time in a professional ranking tournament with a wildcard and a victory over Ben Woollaston in the corresponding round at the Australian Goldfields Open , but was eliminated there by Robert Milkins . In the same year he took part in both the Australian Snooker Championship and the Australian Open Championship , with the former reaching the round of 16 and the latter reaching the quarterfinals, and shortly thereafter retired from the Amateur World Championship earlier than in previous years.

Years of success as an amateur

The year 2016 began for Ridley with a participation in the semi-finals of the Oceania Championship , in which he had to admit defeat in the decider Kurt Dunham . In the same year he reached the round of 16 at the Australian Championship, but retired early at the Australian Open Championship, while he reached the quarter-finals at the Oceania Championship the following year. But shortly afterwards he made it into the final of the Australian championship for the first time, in which he became Australian champion for the first time with a 6: 3 win over Steve Mifsud . After he lost to Mifsud in the semi-finals of the Australian Open Championship, was eliminated early in the Amateur World Championship and won the OBSF 6 Red Snookero Ocean Championship with a 6-0 win over Ryan Thomerson , he moved with a win over Joe Minici, among other things entered the final of the Oceania Championship and won it 6: 4 against Dennis Paul.

In 2018, Ridley was also able to qualify for the professional snooker world championship as an amateur . In the first qualifying round he lost 1:10 against the Scottish ex-world champion Graeme Dott . However, the following national, continental and international tournaments mostly followed mixed results, with a semi-final participation in the Australian Championship 2018 being Ridley's best result.
