2019

The 2018 Betfred World Snooker Championship was held from April 21 to May 7, 2018 at the Crucible Theater in Sheffield . It was the most important tournament on the Snooker Main Tour and ended the 2017/18 season .

World number one Mark Selby had secured the world title in the past two years and, as in the previous year, also won the last tournament before the World Cup with the China Open . He could have won the Crucible three times in a row as the third player after Steve Davis and Stephen Hendry , but was eliminated in the first main round against Joe Perry .

Welshman Mark Williams won his third world title , 15 years after his last World Cup victory. At the age of 43 he is the second oldest winner in the Crucible after his compatriot Ray Reardon in 1978. He defeated John Higgins , who was almost the same age, in the final 18:16.

Prize money

The prize money increased by more than 200,000 pounds and remained only slightly below the 2 million mark. The bonus for the winner alone increased by £ 50,000, but all other players got more as well, down to the winners of the first qualifying round, who each received £ 1,000 more than last year. The premiums for a maximum break were raised by the organizer shortly before the start of the tournament because the jackpot of the "Rolling 147 Prize" was cracked in the previous tournament and otherwise only 5000 pounds would have been in the pot.

qualification

The top 16 of the world rankings were set for the main tournament, their 16 challengers were determined through qualification. The 128 participants included the professional players from 17th place, except for the two Thai Boonyarit Keattikun and Kritsanut Lertsattayatthorn , who canceled their participation. For the 15 remaining places, the WPBSA selected amateur players who were successful in continental and junior championships or who qualified according to other criteria.

The three qualifying rounds took place from April 11-18, 2018 at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield . All games were played in best-of-19 mode .

Century breaks

Main tournament

With a total of 84 century breaks, the World Cup was two behind the record years of 2015 and 2016 . With eleven and thirteen breaks of at least 100 points, respectively, the two finalists John Higgins and Mark Williams achieved the most. The prize of £ 10,000 for the highest break went to Higgins. His 146 points are even rarer than a “ perfect break ” of 147 points.
