Basem Abdullah Eltahhan ( Arabic باسم عبدالله الطحان, DMG Bāsim ʿAbdullāh aṭ-Ṭaḥḥān ; * August 17, 1982 ; also Bassem El Tahan ) is an Egyptian snooker player from Alexandria .
Career
Basem Eltahhan comes from the northern Egyptian port city of Alexandria and plays for the snooker department of al-Masry in neighboring Port Said . He is one of the best national players and has represented Egypt several times internationally. In 2010 and 2011 he was in the quarter-finals of the African Championship .
His first appearance on the professional tour took place in Thailand in early September 2016. He was invited to the 6-Red World Championship as the African champion in Six-Red-Snooker . At the tournament he managed a respectable win against Akani Songsermsawad , but he was eliminated in the group stage.
In 2017 he reached the semi-finals of the African Championship for the first time and defeated the defending champion Peter Francisco from South Africa. He then won the final against his compatriot and three-time title holder Wael Talaat 6-5. Associated with the victory was the right to start as a professional in the Snooker Main Tour in the following two seasons.
He made his first professional appearance in the 2017/18 season at the World Cup together with Hatem Yassen as a two-man team from Egypt. The tournament took place in China. In the first phase of the season he did not take part in individual tournaments in Europe or Asia. He lost his first two appearances at the Home Nations Series in October and November to zero. At the UK Championship he defeated world number one Mark Selby 4: 6. His only victory came in the special format snooker shootout , where he defeated Li Yuan 1-0. He closed the season with a narrow 8:10 defeat against Mei Xiwen . He then took part in the 2018/19 season completely from the start, but lost the first 6 games, 4 of them to zero.
