Akani Songsermsawad ( Thai อรรค นิ ธิ์ ส่งเสริม สวัสดิ์ , nickname Sunny ; born September 10, 1995 in Bangkok ) is a Thai snooker player .

Career

Beginnings

Akani Songsermsawad was promoted at an early age, he was taken out of school and received private lessons so that he had more time for snooker training. At the age of 12 he got one of the wild cards when his home country hosted the amateur world championship . Although he did not get beyond the group stage, he was able to win four of his eleven games. A year later he was allowed to take part in the 6-Red Snooker International in Bangkok, where he won a 5-2 win against professional snooker Matthew Selt . At the age of 16 he became the youngest player on the Thailand Professional Circuit . In the same year he won his country's U21 championship and then played at the U21 World Cup in Canada, where he reached the quarter-finals. In 2012 he took part in the U21 Asian Cup, where he lost to Zhang Anda in the round of 16 after surviving the group stage . At the U21 World Cup in the same year, he was eliminated in the round of 32.

At the national championships of Thailand he reached the semifinals in 2014. A year later he won the U21 Asian Championship in Beijing 6: 4 against the Chinese Yuan Sijun . As the tournament winner, he automatically qualified for the Snooker Main Tour . This gave him professional status and the right to take part in the world ranking tournaments in the following two seasons.

First professional years

Season 2015/16 and 16/17

In his first professional season, Songsermsawad only took part in the 6-Red World Championship held in Thailand and the World Snooker Championship . In the former, he won two out of five games, but it wasn't enough to advance. In the first qualifying round for the World Snooker Championship he lost in a purely Thai duel with Thepchaiya Un-Nooh with 9:10. He finished the season at world number 123 .

Songsermsawad showed its qualities right in the next season. Although he lost in qualifying for the Riga Masters 3: 4 to Mark Selby , but in the second tournament of the season - the Indian Open - he reached the quarter-finals after victories over Ben Woollaston , Jamie Burnett , Mark Davis and Gary Wilson 2: 4 against Kyren Wilson lost. After a 4-5 opening defeat at the World Open , he reached the next quarter-finals at the 6-Red World Championship , which he lost 4-7 to Stuart Bingham . At the Shanghai Masters he lost in the round of 96 against Rod Lawler , at the European Masters in qualifying against Anthony McGill . At the English Open - the first of four tournaments in the newly introduced Home Nations Series - he lost 3: 4 to Ali Carter after a white wash against Kurt Dunham . At the International Championship he lost after qualifying in the first main round 4-6 against Marco Fu . He also came a long way at the Northern Ireland Open , this time eliminated in the round of 32 against Kyren Wilson. After an opening defeat at the UK Championship , he moved into the round of 64 at the Scottish Open , where he was defeated by Li Hang . In qualifying for the German Masters he defeated Graeme Dott, a world champion, and after he had also defeated Jack Lisowski , he moved into the round of 32, where he lost 5-0 to Zhao Xintong . At the Welsh Open and the China Open he lost his first game, in between he reached the second round in the shoot-out , where he lost to David Gilbert . In the qualification for the Snooker World Championship he reached after a 10: 5 against Mei Xiwen and a 10: 9 win over Joe Perry the last qualifying round, where he lost 3:10 to David Grace . Even if he was able to improve his world ranking position significantly, place 79 was not enough for a qualification for the next season. But he received a new two-year start authorization for the Main Tour via the one-year ranking list, so that he could remain on the Main Tour.

Season 2017/18

Songsermsawad only started the season with the 6-Rdd World Championship , where he was eliminated in the round of 16 against Michael Holt after surviving the group stage. At the Indian Open he also reached the second round, where he was eliminated 2: 4 by Liam Highfield . After two opening defeats at the World Open and the European Masters , he defeated Matthew Bolton and Joe Swail at the English Open and lost in the round of 32 with 3: 4 to Anthony McGill . He also reached the round of 32 at the subsequent International Championship , this time defeating Martin O'Donnell 5-6 . He continued this series at the Shanghai Masters and the Northern Ireland Open , losing both times in the same round, first to Martin Gould , then to Mark Williams . An even bigger surprise for him was the UK Championship , where he won Fergal O'Brien , then Michael Holt, and finally Barry Hawkins in the round of 32 . In the round of 16 he met Ronnie O'Sullivan , who defeated him 5-6 in a close match. At the Scottish Open and at the German Masters he lost in the qualification. He reached the next quarter-finals at the snooker shoot-out , where he was eliminated by Martin O'Donnell. At the Welsh Open he made it to the round of 32, this time against Ian Burns . After a defeat in qualifying for the China Open , he reached the second qualifying round of the World Snooker Championship , where he lost 2:10 to Graeme Dott . Songsermsawad finished the season at number 76 in the world .

Season 2018/19

After a defeat in qualifying for the Riga Masters , he reached the first main round of the 2018/19 season with the round of 64 . He lost 5-2 to Barry Hawkins . At the 6-Red World Championship he reached the semifinals, where he was defeated by the eventual winner Kyren Wilson 5-7. After a qualifying defeat at the Indian Open , he came to the China Championship in the first main round, where he was defeated by Mark Selby 3: 5. After another defeat in a tournament qualification, this time at the European Masters , he was able to defeat Kyren Wilson in the first round of the English Open . He then lost 4-0 to Anthony McGill . At the International Championship he defeated the reigning world champions Mark Williams and Zhou Yuelong after qualifying . In the last sixteen he lost to Ali Carter 4-6.
