The SangSom 6-Red World Championship 2017 was a Six Red Snooker invitation tournament of the Snooker Main Tour in the 2017/18 season , which was held from September 4 to 9, 2017 at the Convention Center in Bangkok , Thailand . It was the ninth 6-Red World Championship .

The defending champion was the Chinese Ding Junhui , who was eliminated in the round of 16 against Marco Fu . Mark Williams beat 2015 winner Thepchaiya Un-Nooh 8-2 in the final to claim his first 6-Red World Championship.

Prize money

The premium for the winner rose significantly by 1 million baht (around 25,000 euros), and the total prize money increased by 2 million baht.

Group stage

The number of participants was reduced from 48 to 32 this year. This also changed the mode. For the preliminary round, the field was again divided into eight groups, each of which only consisted of four players. They played against each other in round robin mode, the two best reached the round of 16. Based on the number of points and the frame difference, the direct comparison decided on the placement. Stephen Maguire was the only player who got stuck despite two wins, conversely Ryan Day was the only one who only got one win for a place in the elimination round.
