David Gilbert (born June 12, 1981 in Derby ) is an English snooker player .

Career

Gilbert first played on the Snooker Main Tour in 2002/03 . His debut season culminated in the round of 48 at the Regal Scottish Open . After that, his performance stagnated and he had to leave the professional tour again.

He then qualified again for the 2005/06 season and finally established himself in the midfield of the world rankings, among other things through his qualification for the snooker world championship in 2007 , in which he met seven-time world champion Stephen Hendry in round one and despite a 5: 1- Lead was still 7:10.

Since then he has qualified in other ranking tournaments, first in 2007 at the Welsh Open , a year later at the Royal London Watches Grand Prix and again in 2009 for the Welsh Open. In the latter, after he had surprisingly defeated ex-world champion Mark Williams 5-1 in qualifying, he was able to win his first game against Joe Perry in a final round. In the second round, however, he was defeated by Mark Selby .

Then he fell back in the world rankings and at the end of the 2010/11 season no longer reached the top 64. However, he managed to immediately re-qualify for the main tour via the Q School . At the Australian Goldfields Open 2011 , he moved into the finals of a ranking tournament again. When he made it to the round of 16 he benefited from the luck of the draw, in round one he met local wildcard player James Mifsud .

With victories over Stuart Carrington , Jimmy Robertson , Mike Dunn and Fergal O'Brien , he qualified for the finals of the 2012 World Snooker Championship . There he prevailed in the first round with 10: 8 against Martin Gould , he was then defeated in the second round to the Australian Neil Robertson with 9:13.

The following season was not particularly successful for him and he was also unable to take part in the World Cup finals. He finished the season in 41st place. From the 2013/14 season he often reached the finals and was thus able to maintain his level (37th place). He reached the Grand Final of the PTC Tour and was only defeated in the round of 16 to Joe Perry 1: 4, after he had previously beaten Mark Selby 4: 0. At the 2014 World Cup, he was defeated by Barry Hawkins 4:10 in round 1 .

He was also in seven finals in the 2014/15 season , but again often lost in the first round. At the UK Championship 2014 and the China Open 2015 , however, he was able to reach the third round. In the group stage of the Championship League 2015 , he played his first official maximum break on February 10, 2015 . He did not qualify for the World Cup and finished the season in 35th place.

In the 2015/16 season , David Gilbert then made it into the top 32 of the world rankings. At the Ruhr Open , he reached the semi-finals of a ranking tournament for the first time. He then reached the final of the International Championship 2015 in Daqing , where he was defeated by John Higgins 5:10. This earned him £ 65,000 in prize money. In the other two top tournaments, the UK Championship and the World Championship , he came under the last 32. His best placement during the season was 19th in the world rankings.

In the 2016/17 season he reached the quarter-finals of the snooker shoot-out 2017 , where he lost to Xiao Guodong .

At the end of the 2016/2017 season he was defeated in the 3rd and final qualifying round for the 2017 Snooker World Championship against Fergal O'Brien in the Decider , the longest frame in snooker history (123 minutes), with 46:73.

In the 2018/19 season he reached the final of the World Open 2018 , in which he lost after 9: 5 lead with 9:10 against the reigning world champion Mark Williams . On January 22, 2019, he played the 147th official maximum break in snooker history in his game against the Scottish Stephen Maguire in the Championship League , but he was defeated in the game with 1: 3. At the beginning of February 2019 he reached the final of the German Masters for the second time this season. He lost again, this time 7: 9 against Kyren Wilson , although he had already led 7: 5. At the following tournament, the World Grand Prix 2019 , he reached the quarter-finals, in which he lost to Ali Carter 5-1. Nevertheless, he achieved his best place in the snooker world rankings with position 16.

A few months after the start of the 2019/20 season , he again reached the final of a ranking tournament at the English Open , in which he lost again with a 1: 9 defeat against Mark Selby .
