Main round
The main tournament in Berlin began on Wednesday, January 30th with the 32 players who had survived the two qualifying rounds at the end of 2018. Shaun Murphy had played the best qualification, but surprisingly lost his opening game against Peter Ebdon . Ebdon had already achieved his best result in a long time by reaching the finals at the second German tournament, the Paul Hunter Classic , at the beginning of the season. The round of 16 was a new edition of this very final and Ebdon lost again clearly against Kyren Wilson . In the quarterfinals, Wilson met defending champion Mark Williams . The Welshman had played confidently until then and won 5-0 in Round 2, but against Wilson it was he who got no chance. The PHC winner won 5-0 and made it to the semi-finals.
The elimination of the 5th placed Barry Hawkins against Robert Milkins in round 1 came as a surprise, even if it was just 4: 5. Against Stephen Maguire , the "Milkman" had no chance afterwards. The Scot met Judd Trump in the quarter-finals , who was the top candidate for victory after winning the Masters the week before. The players had only given two or three frames in the first two rounds, but in the direct duel Maguire clearly retained the upper hand with 5: 2.
The highest seeded player, for whom the tournament was already over in round 1, was the world number four John Higgins . Lately already dissatisfied with his form, he could not convince against the young Chinese talent Yuan Sijun either. Neither player used their chances consistently and so the other player succeeded several times in "stealing" frames on the last balls. Despite the 3: 1 and 4: 3 lead of the Scotsman it came to the decider , in which Higgins again took the clear lead, but missed the decision due to a mistake. Yuan emptied the table and secured victory with the last black. Even Jack Lisowski did not seem to be more in the good shape of the first half of the season, losing to Duane Jones with 2: 5th The Welshman made it into a round of 16 for the first time in his career. But he was able to improve the result: in the duel of the surprise players, he defeated Yuan 5-3. And in the quarter-finals he met a top player with Ding Junhui , but the Chinese had already struggled in the first two rounds and the 25-year-old Jones was also able to beat him 5-3 and advance to the semi-finals.
Neil Robertson survived the first round confidently with 5: 1 , as did Mark Selby . The world number one got three century breaks against Ricky Walden . In the second, he had already punched red and black 15 times and was on the way to a maximum break , but then failed on the difficult yellow along the board. In round 2 he was 3-1 ahead against David Gilbert with a Century and two other high breaks, then his game broke off. Gilbert won three frames in a row, Selby still saved himself in the ninth and decisive frame, which he then lost with the last black. Gilbert met Robertson in the quarterfinals, who had previously defeated ex-world champion Stuart Bingham 5-0. But the Australian could not make anything out of a 3-1 lead, after the break, Gilbert won four frames in a row and moved into a semifinals for the second time this season after the World Open and for the third time overall.
As twice before, he also won his third semi-final. His opponent Duane Jones won the first frame, but Gilbert equalized and by the time he won the third, contested frame, he had the game under control. He clearly won 6-1. In the second semi-final, only one player was able to build on his previous performance. Maguire had a false start and Kyren Wilson took a 3-0 lead. Only the fourth frame was contested, but that he went to the Englishman with the last black turned out to be a preliminary decision. After the break, Maguire got the first frame, but when he didn't use good chances and Wilson made the next point with a 63 break, the resistance was broken. He also got the seventh frame and won 6-1.
final
The favorite in the final was the 27-year-old world number nine Kyren Wilson , who was in a professional final for the eighth time and had already won three Main Tour titles. For David Gilbert , who was ten years his senior , it was at least his third final; he had lost the previous two. He had also lost the only two professional matches between the two players. Wilson also took the lead 2-0 and 4-1, but Gilbert won the next two frames and although Wilson finished the afternoon session 5-3, Gilbert had kept his chances open. This also proved to be true in the evening when he won the first four frames and turned the deficit into a 7-5 lead. Wilson, who had not found his way into the game by then, came out of the break concentrated and got the next frame with his highest final break. In the following frame, he was clearly behind, but turned it and equalized. Gilbert, who earlier in the season at the World Open could not use a 9: 5 lead, failed again this time shortly before the goal. Wilson dominated the last two frames and won 9-7.

qualification
As in previous years, the Barnsley qualification took place at the Metrodome . It was again the only tournament of the season with two qualifying rounds. From December 18-21, 2018, the 32 players who competed in Berlin a month and a half later were selected from the field of professionals.
Five professionals had not registered for the tournament, in addition to Ronnie O'Sullivan , who was already missing last year, a second top 8 player, Mark Allen , was not at the start. The Northern Irish had won the Scottish Open immediately before . The field of participants was supplemented by players from the Challenge Tour . But the German champion from 2017 Richard Wienold and the U-16 world champion Ben Mertens from Belgium also got a wildcard . Both lost their opening games, as did the professionals Simon Lichtenberg and Alexander Ursenbacher from Germany and Switzerland.
The only player from the German-speaking area who reached round 2 was Lukas Kleckers , who then had no chance against the fifth in the world rankings Judd Trump . Trump scored a maximum break in the match , the fourth in his career. Like the Englishman, all the other players from the top 12 of the seeding list qualified for the main tournament. The only player from the current top 16 who did not make it to Berlin was Belgian Luca Brecel . Ali Carter and Marco Fu , the 2013 finalists , were two other prominent players who failed to make it through the opening round. Last year's finalist Graeme Dott lost in round 2. With Sam Baird and Duane Jones only two players outside the top 64 of the seeding list managed to qualify.
