Career

Beginnings

At the age of 17, Zhang Yong took part in the Asian tournaments of the Players Tour Championship for the first time in 2013 , a tournament series for professionals and amateurs. There he caused a surprise at the third tournament in Zhengzhou when he beat Welsh professional Matthew Stevens 4-0 and made it to the round of 16. There he lost 4-1 to Tom Ford , which gave him a prize of £ 1,000 . He also took part in Asian events the next year, but only reached the round of 64 twice. In the 2014/15 season he received a wildcard from the Chinese association for the Shanghai Masters , but lost 5-2 to Mark Williams . After participating in the first two Asian PTC tournaments, he was able to defeat Poomjaeng , Li Yuan and Jimmy Robertson at the Dechawat , so that he achieved his greatest success to date with his entry into the quarter-finals. He lost 4-0 to Mark Williams. He also got a wildcard for the China Open , where he lost 5-2 to Zhou Yuelong . In the overall standings of the PTC Asian tournaments this season, Zhang was the best Chinese amateur. Through the Asian Order of Merit , he was then authorized to start the following two seasons on the Snooker Main Tour as a professional player.

In 2015 he also took part in the Asian Amateur Championship and reached the semi-finals, which he lost to ex-professional Pankaj Advani .

First professional years

After two opening defeats at the Australian Open and the Paul Hunter Classic , Zhang defeated Englishman Steven Hallworth at the Shanghai Masters , but lost 5-0 to David Gilbert in the second qualifying round . At the Ruhr Open he moved into the round of 32, where he lost to Dominic Dale . In the further course of the season he could not win a single game up to and including the China Open and slipped to world number 115. In the subsequent World Snooker Championship he succeeded in the first qualifying round a 10: 7 win over Noridren Joe Swail , then he was defeated by Matthew Stevens 3:10. He finished his first professional season on world number 98 .

In the next season he was able to qualify for the Riga Masters by a 4-3 win against Mark Joyce , where he was eliminated in the first round against Ali Carter . He also reached the main round at the Indian Open and the World Open , but lost to Mark Williams and Kyren Wilson respectively . After an opening defeat at the Paul Hunter Classic against Mark Allen , Zhang also made it into the second qualifying round of the Shanghai Masters , where he failed to Rory McLeod . In the remaining six tournaments of the year, Zhang lost all games. A ray of hope for qualifying for the next season was the German Masters , where he reached the main round in Berlin after victories over Mike Dunn and Mark Davis . There he lost 3-5 against Stuart Bingham . After an opening defeat at the Welsh Open , Zhang moved into the round of 32 of the shoot-out , where he lost to Andy Hicks . At the Gibraltar Open he was able to move into the second round, but he lost to Mark Williams. He lost his first game at both the China Open and the World Snooker Championship , so he ended the season at number 95 in the world, which was not enough to qualify for the next season. Zhang tried to re-qualify through the 2017 Q School . In the first tournament he reached the fifth of six rounds, but he was eliminated by a 1: 4 against Billy Joe Castle . Also in the second tournament he was eliminated in the fifth round, this time 3: 4 against Alex Davies . But through the Order of Merit of the Q School, he was allowed to start for another two years.
