Wildcard round

Final round
In round 1, the 16 best players in the world rankings were seeded without Ronnie O'Sullivan , who had not started , eight other players had qualified directly, the remaining eight via the wildcard round. With the world number one Mark Selby and the number 10 Ricky Walden , however, two top players canceled after the start of the tournament. Selby had a death in the family, with Walden the reason for rejection was more gratifying: he became a father for the first time.
The biggest surprise of the first round was the elimination of world number three Neil Robertson against Jamie Cope , the lowest-placed player after amateur Fang Xiongman . For the Australian it was already the second opening defeat of the season at the second world ranking tournament. Kyren Wilson's success against Joe Perry was also unexpected.
Wilson then also won in the round of 16. There came the end for Shaun Murphy for the next top 8 player. Judd Trump only managed to advance with the black ball in the decisive frame against Matthew Selt . In the quarter-finals, the top seeded world champion Stuart Bingham had to make the decision, which he clearly won against Martin Gould . Kyren Wilson, who had only reached a quarter-finals of a world ranking tournament two years earlier at the same tournament, faced local hero Ding Junhui , who had advanced to third place in the provisional world rankings. Nevertheless, the Englishman never fell behind in frames and was ultimately able to just win the decision frame.
In the semifinals, Judd Trump then prevailed relatively confidently against Bingham. And Kyren Wilson continued his great success and defeated Mark Allen 6-1. Despite the clear final result, it was a hard-fought match in which the Northern Irishman took the lead more or less clearly in all frames. Wilson turned the result six times, twice he won with black and once he required a foul from everyone.

final
In his first Main Tour final, Kyren Wilson took the lead first. The frame gains alternated up to 2: 2, in the second part of the afternoon session he managed to pull away to 6: 3. Judd Trump's efforts to catch up were dampened with the loss of the first evening frame, but then he reported back with the only century break of the final. After the 8: 4 by Wilson, Trump finally managed a series of three wins and the connection to 8: 7. The next contested frame brought Wilson only one frame closer to victory, but with two high breaks Trump managed to equalize for the first time since the fourth frame. In frame 18, Wilson had bad luck that he punched two red balls at once and thus made sure that he needed snooker. In an exciting tactical game he forced his opponent to 13 foul points, but then came under pressure himself and still lost. In the decision-making frame he kept his nerve again and even scored his own highest break of the final with 75 points, making him the winner of the tournament with a 10: 9. Kyren Wilson had won a professional tournament for the first time. Judd Trump, on the other hand, lost a final of the Shanghai Masters for the second time after 2012 with 9:10.
