The Falkenhausenschule is a four-class primary school in Kehl with bilingual and equal German-French profiles, at which around 360 students are taught in 16 classes.

history

The school building was built between 1913 and 1915 and opened in April 1915 as an elementary school at the city pond . In December of the same year it was given its current name after Colonel General Baron Ludwig von Falkenhausen , whom the Kehler municipal council wanted to honor for his services in sparing the city from a French attack. During the First World War , the school was partly used as a hospital for a short time . Between 1927 and 1931 it was temporarily called the Pestalozzi School after the Swiss educator Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi . After the occupation of Kehl by the French military, the school building housed the French Ecole Primaire Strasbourg-Kehl from November 1946 to June 1954 , to which children of the French civilian population settled in Kehl went. In 1976 the previously existing primary and secondary school (grades 1 to 9) was converted into a pure elementary school with grades 1 to 4. For the Jewish teacher Lazarus Mannheimer, who was deported and murdered under National Socialist rule, a stumbling block was set up in front of the school on July 15, 2011 in cooperation with grade 4 .

Bilingual profiles

Due to the border with France, there are many bilingual families in the Kehl-Strasbourg Eurodistrict and the surrounding area. The Falkenhausenschule has been offering special bilingual German-French classes for these classes since 1991. It was not until 1998 that the profile was officially approved by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Culture. Since 2006 there has been another Franco-German profile at the school, the French-German classes. Only children growing up bilingual German-French can be registered in the bilingual classes. There is no language acquisition of the French language, the children can work in all subjects in German and / or French. The equal classes are open to all children. In addition to the classic subjects on the primary school lesson table, the focus is on learning the target language French. That is why the French language is integrated almost equally in the subjects human-nature-culture and sport. This language training offer is unique in Baden-Württemberg. On January 29, 2019, the Falkenhausenschule was the first elementary school in the state to be awarded the LabelFrancÉducation certificate from the Institut français .
