Aberlady ( Gaelic : Obar Lìobhaite ) is a village in the Scottish Council Area East Lothian . It is located in the north of the region around 22 km east of central Edinburgh and six kilometers northwest of Haddington at the head of Aberlady Bay , a bay on the south bank of the Firth of Forth . The mansions Luffness House and Gosford House are in the vicinity of the village .

history

A religious center has been in the area around Aberlady since early Christian times. So probably since the 7th century Culdeer settled near today's Luffness House. A Carmelite fortress was built there in the late 16th century . The oldest fragments of Aberlady Parish Church date from the 15th century. The listed building was given its current appearance in 1886.

The Aberlady market cross dates from the 18th century. Until the middle of the 19th century, Aberlady had its own port, which supplied the town of Haddington. After the bay silted up, it was abandoned. Haddington House , where customs clearance was carried out, stood in connection with the port . In the 1830s, the Earl of Wemyss had several elongated red stone cottages built in Aberlady .

Between 1831 and 1881 the population of Aberladys fluctuated only slightly around 1000. In the 1951 census, 1172 inhabitants were counted. After the population then fell to 641 within ten years, there was an increasing trend in the following period with the last 1166 people in 2011.

traffic

In Aberlady the A6137 coming from Haddington joins the A198 . The nearest train station is around four kilometers away in Longniddry . It was opened in the middle of the 19th century. On a branch line opened in 1898 between Longniddry and Gullane , Aberlady was given its own train station in the meantime, but this was shut down with the line in the 1960s. With the Edinburgh Airport is an international airport located about 31 km west.
