Xiao Guodong ( Chinese 肖国栋 , Pinyin Xiao Guódòng ; born February 10, 1989 ) is a Chinese snooker player .
Career
amateur
Xiao Guodong made his first international appearance as a wildcard player at the 2005 China Open . He lost 3-5 to Dave Harold . Two years later he won his wildcard match against Tom Ford on his second appearance at the China Open and then lost to Matthew Stevens . With his victory at the U21 Asian Championship , he qualified for the 2007/08 season of the Main Tour . His first year as a professional was not very successful, however, despite some notable results such as a 5-0 win over Jimmy White in the Northern Ireland Trophy ; at the end of the season he was 84th in the snooker world rankings , which was not enough to stay on the professional tour.
The following year he received a wildcard as an amateur player for both ranking tournaments in China. While he lost his opening match against Jimmy White at the Shanghai Masters 2008 , he reached the round of 16 at the China Open 2009 by defeating Michael Holt and compatriot Ding Junhui , where he was defeated by three-time world champion Ronnie O'Sullivan 3: 5. In the 2008/09 season he won 2 of the 8 tournaments of the Pontin's International Open Series and took second place in the overall standings, thus ensuring his return to the Main Tour.
Second attempt
Although he failed to qualify for the finals of a ranked tournament in the 2009/10 season , he won significantly more qualifying games than in his debut season two years earlier. At the end of the season he was ranked 75th. He missed the athletic qualification for the following season, but he received a wild card from the world association.
In the 2010/11 season he was able to confirm its upward trend. Although he did not qualify for the finals of a ranked tournament again, he did not lose any of his opening games in qualifying. In the UK Championship he survived three qualifying rounds and only then lost 7: 9 to Judd Trump . At the end of the season it was enough for 64th place in the world rankings and thus just enough for an extension of the Main Tour membership.
Establishment
The 2011/12 season also started successfully. At the second PTC event in Gloucester, he made it to the semi-finals, having already reached the quarter-finals at the first PTC tournament . At the Warsaw Classic 2011 (also part of the PTC series) there was another quarter-finals. At the PTC Grand Finals in March 2012, Xiao, who played with a plastered, broken left hand, beat Dominic Dale and Judd Trump before losing 4-1 to Andrew Higginson in the quarter-finals . In the other big tournaments he only got past the second round at the UK Championship, but he improved to 41st place.
At the beginning of the next season he was at the Australian Open for the first time in the last 32 in a ranking tournament outside of the PTC Tour. He was able to repeat this at the German Masters . In addition, however, he was again particularly successful in the small PTC tournaments and in the final tournament he made the jump to the quarter-finals again.
In addition to the main tour, he also took part in the 4th Asian Indoor & Martial Arts Games 2013 in Incheon , Korea . He defeated the Iranian Amir Sarkhosh 5: 4 in the final of the Six Red Snooker competition and received the gold medal.

2013/14 season
At the beginning of the 2013/14 season , Xiao reached the round of 16 at the Wuxi Classic . In September 2013, Xiao reached the finals of a world ranking tournament for the first time at the Shanghai Masters , where he had to admit defeat to his compatriot Ding Junhui with 6:10. This also made him one of the top 32 in the world. At the German Masters , he was then in the quarter-finals, at other tournaments he reached the main round, including for the first time at the World Cup . He lost his first game at the Crucible Theater with 8:10 to Ali Carter . He finished the game year in 23rd place in the world rankings.
2014/15 season and 2015/16 season
The following year he made it to the semi-finals in Australia , his second-best result in a full world rankings tournament. He reached the round of 16 twice and took his best world rankings after the German Masters with 19th place. In his first participation in the Championship League , he reached the second group stage. At the snooker shoot-out 2015 he was in the final and only just lost to Michael White from Welsh .
In the 2015/16 season , Xiao was then under pressure to defend the points won two years earlier. But in almost all tournaments it was over for him after the second round at the latest, only at the World Cup he was able to save a few points by reaching the last 48. Nevertheless, it fell back to 51st. Good results only followed the following year with the quarter-finals at the Riga Masters and the second round at the English Open , where he once beat a top player with Neil Robertson .
Season 2016/17
In the 2016/17 season he reached the final of the snooker shoot-out 2017 where he lost to Anthony McGill . At the World Cup , he played after three wins in the qualifying games in the first round of the main round against Ryan Day , whom he beat 10: 4.
