Judd Trump (born August 20, 1989 in Bristol ) is an English snooker player and the current number one in the world rankings . Trump has won 17 ranked tournaments in his professional career since 2005, including the UK Championship , Masters and World Cup . By winning these three titles, he became the eleventh member of the Triple Crown .

Career

Youth and first seasons

Trump was considered a great talent from a young age. Among other things, he won the U13 and three U15 titles in England. On March 14, 2004, at the age of 14 years and 208 days, he scored a maximum break at the U16 tournament in Leicester , undercutting Ronnie O'Sullivan's 13-year-old record . He was 15 years and 98 days old when he hit the first maximum break in a tournament.

For the 2005/06 season, Trump received a wildcard for the Main Tour , making him the youngest player of all time in the tournament series of snooker professionals. Having reached the round of 32 at the Welsh Open 2006 , he is also the youngest player to ever make it into the main round of a world ranking tournament. This result secured him with the rankings position 74 also the stay on the Main Tour.

In the following years he climbed steadily up the ranking. In 2007 he qualified for the World Snooker Championship . In the following year, after Graeme Dott's failure at the Grand Prix , he reached the second round for the first time at a professional tournament, he won there against Joe Perry and finally even made it to the semifinals with a victory over Ronnie O'Sullivan. In the same year he also won the qualifying tournament for the Masters .

In the 2009/10 season , Trump made it into the top 32 of the world rankings and thus only had to play one qualifying round (before two rounds) for a tournament on the Main Tour. However, he had his greatest successes in invitation tournaments: He won the Championship League and was thus qualified for the Premier League Snooker 2009 , in which he finished second in the preliminary round with victories over Ronnie O'Sullivan, Marco Fu , Stephen Hendry and Shaun Murphy , only to be eliminated in the semifinals.

2010/11 and 2011/12 season

In the 2010/11 season started Trump with the title at the Austrian Snooker Open in Wels , where he the former world champion in the finals Neil Robertson defeated. With the Paul Hunter Classic 2010 , which was part of the newly introduced Players Tour Championship , he won his first minor ranking tournament. In April 2011 he reached the final of the China Open and thus for the first time the final of a full ranking tournament. With a 10: 8 win over Mark Selby , he won his first title on the Main Tour. At the subsequent Snooker World Cup , he won his opening match (again against defending champion Neil Robertson) and stormed into the final. There he was defeated by John Higgins with 15:18, but was able to secure a place in the top 16 of the world rankings with his performance .

The following season he won the second PTC event in Gloucester and the ninth PTC tournament in Antwerp (4-3 final victory over Ronnie O'Sullivan), and he was in the final again. With a 10: 8 win over Mark Allen , he secured his second title in a full ranking tournament at the 2011 UK Championship . After that there was no further outstanding success, but he reached the quarter-finals three times and collected world ranking points, so that he advanced to second place. He was also successful in invitation tournaments. In both the Masters and the Premier League he reached the semifinals, in the Championship League he was in the final. At the World Cup he was eliminated in the round of 16 with a narrow 12-13 defeat against the eventual finalist Allister Carter .

Season 2012/13 and 2013/14

Judd Trump at the German Masters 2013

In the 2012/13 season started Trump behave only at the Shanghai Masters , he again showed his strong offensive game and pushed until the final. He was already leading 7-2 against John Higgins, but then broke in the second session and lost 9:10. As a result, he missed the jump to number 1 in the preliminary world rankings. In November he won the International Championship with 10: 8 in the final over Neil Robertson . With his clear 9-1 semi-final victory over ex-world champion Peter Ebdon , he had already overtaken Mark Selby on points and placed himself at the top of the world rankings. A little later he won his fourth PTC tournament with the Bulgarian Open 2012 . However, he could only hold first place for a short time, the rest of the season was changeable, there were three defeats in the beginning, but he also made it to the semi-finals twice. He lost one semifinal at the 2013 World Snooker Championship against eventual winner Ronnie O'Sullivan.

What followed was a mixed 2013/14 season , which Trump started in third place in the world rankings. At the German Masters he only lost in the final against the man of the season Ding Junhui . At the minor tournament in Gloucester he was also in the final. In November 2013, Trump made his first official maximum break in the round of 32 against Mark Selby at the Antwerp Open . His only tournament victory was in the Championship League, which does not count for the rankings. So he could not maintain his place and fell back to sixth at the end of the season.

Season 2014/15 and 2015/16

Trump was successful again in the 2014/15 season. At the third tournament, the Australian Goldfields Open , he won the fourth ranking tournament of his career. He defeated Neil Robertson 9: 5 in the final . At the end of August 2014 he reached the final of the Paul Hunter Classic , but lost to Mark Allen 2: 4. In November he made it to the finals at the invitation tournament Champion of Champions , but there he was defeated by the defending champion Ronnie O'Sullivan with 7:10. A month later he reached the final of the UK Championship , where he met O'Sullivan again. Again he lost, but only just 9:10. The 2015 World Grand Prix , a newly introduced invitation tournament, saw the third meeting in the final. This time Trump achieved the first win against the five-time world champion in three years and the second title win of the season.

Judd Trump achieved his fifth title in a world ranking tournament at the end of the 2015/16 season at the China Open .

Season 2016/17

The 2016/17 season was very successful for him. In mid-September 2016, Trump started with a new cue after his old cue had bent. At the European Masters he made it to the finals and the renewed clash with O'Sullivan he won 9: 8. In the final he scored the 400th Century Break of his career. He reached the final of the English Open , the Welsh Open and the Gibraltar Open . In March 2017 he won the Players Championship against Marco Fu 10: 8. With his seventh victory in the rankings, he improved back to second place in the world rankings. At the China Open he was surprisingly eliminated from the Iranian Hossein Vafaei , but scored his third maximum break in the previous game.

Season 2017/18

After undergoing laser eye surgery, Trump missed the start of the 2017/18 season . After that, he didn't really get going on his first appearances. It wasn't until the European Masters at the beginning of October 2017 that he survived the first three rounds and continued his way to the finals. There he defeated Stuart Bingham 9: 7, defending a title for the first time in his career.

At the Shanghai Masters Trump reached the final again with victories over Alfie Burden , Ben Woollaston , Stephen Maguire , Luca Brecel and Jack Lisowski , in which he was defeated by Ronnie O'Sullivan 3:10.

With victories over Chris Wakelin and Ricky Walden , Trump was able to move into the third round of the 2018 World Snooker Championship . In the quarter-finals, Trump led 11: 9 against John Higgins , but then lost with 12:13.

Season 2018/19

At the start of the 2018/19 season , Trump reached the round of 32 of the World Open , before failing to John Higgins in the quarter-finals at the China Championship after an opening defeat at the Shanghai Masters, which had been downgraded to an invitation tournament . At the European Masters he then reached the round of 32 again before failing in the quarter-finals of the English Open on Welsh Ryan Day . At the International Championship and the invitation tournament Champion of Champions he reached the quarterfinals, where he was defeated by the Englishmen Jack Lisowski and Kyren Wilson . At the Northern Ireland Open he reached his first season finale, where he met Ronnie O'Sullivan in the final after victories over, among others, Jack Lisowski, Ryan Day, Luca Brecel and Eden Sharav . Trump won the close final game 9-7, with the final score being the only two-frame lead during the entire match.

After a round of 16 participation in the UK Championship , he reached the semi-finals at the Scottish Open . In the new year he took part in the Championship League , where he finished fifth in the second group with three wins in six games, which he moved into group three. There he finished fourth again with three wins from six games, but after a semi-final victory over Stuart Bingham he met Barry Hawkins in the group final , whom he defeated 3-0, which he qualified for the Winner's Group at the end of the tournament. Also in January, he won the Masters for the first time by beating Ronnie O'Sullivan 10-4 , after beating Kyren Wilson, Mark Selby and Neil Robertson . After a quarter-final defeat against the Scot Stephen Maguire at the German Masters , he reached the final of a ranking tournament at the World Grand Prix , where he was able to defeat Ali Carter 10: 6. After a second round defeat at the Welsh Open , he qualified for the China Open in early April at the end of February . At the 2019 Snooker World Championship he won the title for the first time with a clear 18: 9 final victory over John Higgins . In this match he scored seven century breaks, equaling the record of Stephen Hendry and Ding Junhui.

Season 2019/20

In the 2019/20 season , Trump continued his series of successes from the previous season. With the International Championship , the World Open and the Northern Ireland Open , he had already won three ranking tournaments by November. At the beginning of the next year, with his 9: 6 final victory at the German Masters over Neil Robertson, he took revenge for the final at the Champion of Champions that had been lost a few weeks earlier . In March he defeated Yan Bingtao in the Final of the Players Championship 10-4 . With that he set the previous record of five tournaments won within one season. After winning his sixth ranking tournament within one season with the Gibraltar Open 2020 in mid-March , he is now the sole record holder. At the 2020 World Cup, he was eliminated as defending champion in the quarter-finals with 9:13 against Kyren Wilson. During the season he scored a total of 102 Century Breaks, narrowly missing the record set by Neil Robertson (103) from the 2014 season.

Nicknames

After Judd Trump was initially announced as Mr. Haircut 100 (see Haircut 100 ) at the 2011 World Cup because of his wild hairstyle , he replied that he did not like this nickname. To put it off, he suggested that it would be better to introduce it under the nickname The Ace . At the following sessions of the World Cup, his request was granted.
