The Acuerate Antwerp Open 2011 was the ninth event of the Players Tour Championship 2011/12 . The snooker tournament was held from November 10th to 13th, 2011 in the Lotto Arena in Antwerp , Belgium . It replaced the Brugge Open , which was the Belgian tournament on the previous year's tour. It was televised by Eurosport as one of six PTC tournaments. In the early 1990s, professional tournaments were held in Antwerp ( European Open ).

252 players had registered for the tournament, more than at any PTC tournament before. Exactly 82 of them came from Belgium. With Wendy Jans that included a former women's world champion. The only two Belgian world ranking players Björn Haneveer and Luca Brecel were seeded directly for the main tournament. The top 5 player Ding Junhui was missing again, which means that the Chinese missed his chance to participate in the tour finals, as he can no longer achieve the minimum required participation in three European tournaments with only one tournament left.

All tournament games were played in best-of-seven mode.

Preliminary round

156 players had applied for the 32 free places in the main tournament. In three rounds, all of which were held on November 10, 2011, the main participants were determined.

Most of the qualifying matches were played in the Lotto Arena, while 52 games were played in the nearby snooker club Matchroom .

56 amateurs met in pairs in lap 1. In addition to the 28 winners, there were 100 more players who then played the 32 players for the free places in the main tournament in two more rounds.

Round 1

The respective winners are marked in bold, small. means that the player has moved on to the next round without a fight (by not playing the opponent).

Finals

The main tournament with 128 participants began with the fourth round of the tournament. The upper half (groups 1-4) of the seeding list played rounds 4 to 6 on Friday, November 11th, the lower half (groups 5-8) was at the tables on Saturday. The last four rounds from the round of 16 to the final were carried out on the final Sunday.

Eight Belgian amateurs made it to the main tournament and one of them, Peter Bullen, even made it to the next round with a victory over the young professional Li Yan . He got further than his compatriot Björn Haneveer , who will be giving up his professional career: In the future he will prefer his profession as a carpenter and house restorer. His last appearance in front of a home crowd was over in the first round after he could not use his existing chances, but with Jimmy White he also had another big opponent. The Englishman then delivered a big fight in round 3 in the meeting of the next generation of young talent Judd Trump , which he narrowly lost. There was still the young Belgian hope Luca Brecel , the wildcard professional mastered the first two easy hurdles, but then failed because of the Indian Aditya Mehta , for whom the round of 16 was his greatest PTC success, which he won with a victory over the number 15 in the world rankings Matthew Stevens and the move into the last eight.

The negative surprise was the early exit in round three for world number one and touring fourth Mark Selby against Andy Hicks . Shaun Murphy's opening defeat against Michael Holt also came unexpectedly, as the world number six seemed to be back in the PTC rhythm with two quarter-finals recently. Stuart Bingham , who was still the winner of the first world rankings of the season in July, was eliminated in round one 4-0 against Justin Astley, who returned from the Main Tour . The clear 1: 4 against Mike Dunn was already the sixth PTC first round defeat for world number two Mark Williams , Ali Carter and Stephen Maguire , who also had no convincing PTC result this season, were also out of the tournament early.

Quarter-finals to finals

The Indian Mehta was the biggest surprise in the quarter-finals, and only Jack Lisowski was not a top 16 player. The young Englishman is, however, a PTC specialist and was in this round for the third time this season and for the fifth time in all. There he met Graeme Dott , who had fought his way through the tournament and had to go three times over seven frames. The Scot won and secured his third PTC semi-final of the season. Martin Gould moved into the round of the last eight with a victory over Selby conqueror Hicks, where he also ended Mehta's winning streak. With his semi-finals he underscored his newly won position among the top 16. Neil Robertson and Ronnie O'Sullivan , who had divided the three PTC tournaments in October, reached the quarter-finals with some confidence, the Englishman in particular was in a playful mood and gave up until then only three frames off. He also left the Australian only one frame in the direct encounter. World number three, John Higgins, also only made three frames to the quarter-finals. But then he met Judd Trump, who got rolling after his success against Jimmy White and was able to convincingly prevail 4-2.

In the semifinals, the top players on Sunday O'Sullivan and Trump then had little trouble with Dott and Gould and won each 4: 1. The dream final of the two most spectacular players kept what it promised. After an opening win for O'Sullivan, Trump continued to play aggressively and boldly and used every long newcomer, which brought him 3: 1 forward with three middle breaks. But the old master countered with two century breaks and equalized. In the decision-making frame, it went back and forth until a lucky hit Trump saved a series that secured him the final victory. He was the third player of the season to win two PTC tournaments. That also earned him second place in the overall standings behind O'Sullivan.

Century breaks

For the fourth time in this PTC series, Ronnie O'Sullivan had made the most century breaks, for the third time he got five, only two players got five in a tournament so far, but only once. In his last Century in the final, Ronnie skipped the black ball and missed the highest break. Therefore, Nigel Bond with 137 points was enough for the first time this season a series of less than 140 points for the record.
