Chen Zhe ( Chinese  陈 喆 , Pinyin Chén Zhé ; born February 28, 1993 ) is a Chinese snooker player .

Career

Beginnings

In order to make the leap to the pros on the Main Tour , Chen took part in the Pontin's International Open Series in 2009/10 . However, he only appeared in two of eight tournaments and could only record a single win (against Matthew Day ). In the end, he only ended up in 113th place in the overall ranking.

At the tournaments of the Players Tour Championship in the 2010/11 and 2011/12 seasons, Chen tried to compete with the professional players of the Main Tour. He reached the round of 32 three times, defeating players like Matthew Selt and Rory McLeod . In the 2010/11 season , the Q School replaced the PIOS series as a qualifying tournament series for amateurs. In 2011, Chen failed in one of the three tournaments only in the final (against Andrew Norman ) of his group. In 2012 he won his group in the first tournament and received a 2-year tour ticket.

First years as a professional

At the beginning of the 2012/13 season he only managed to win against Pankaj Advani at the Wuxi Classic 2012 . Only the PTC tournaments were successful for him, at the tournament in Zhangjiagang 2012 he even reached the semi-finals with victories over Tom Ford and Ben Woollaston . His first success at a major world ranking tournament was the UK Championship in 2012 , where he survived two qualifying rounds. At the Haikou World Open 2013 and the China Open 2013 , he only missed the main tournament by one win. He finished the season after one year in 78th place in the snooker world rankings .

In the new season, Chen Zhe won the opening game in the first four world ranking tournaments. But from the International Championship 2013 he couldn't win any more games. There were no successes on the PTC Tour either, and so he slipped to 89th place in the world rankings at the end of the 2013/14 season . With that he dropped out of the main tour and the attempt to immediately re-qualify via the Q School failed.

Amateur time

The following year he took part in the PTC Asia tour, but didn't get very far. His renewed Q-School attempt ended in the first tournament with a final defeat in his group against Sydney Wilson . Despite missing the Main Tour qualification, he was allowed to participate in the qualification for the Australian Open 2015 . A year later he tried again through Q School and this time he won his qualifying group for the second time . He was again admitted to the Main Tour for two years.

Second professional time

Season 2016/17

In his first game of the 2016/17 season , Chen won the qualification for the Riga Masters against Josh Boileau 4-1, but he withdrew from the tournament before his game against Li Hang in the first main round. This was followed by two defeats in the qualifications: In the qualification for the Indian Open he lost 4-0 to the Scot Anthony McGill , at the World Open 5-0 to Michael Holt . He also lost his first round game at the Paul Hunter Classic 2: 4 against Chris Wakelin . At the Shanghai Masters he reached the second round of qualification, after defeating Michael Wild 5-2, he lost 3-5 to Jack Lisowski . Three defeats followed: In the qualification for the European Masters with 0: 4 against Jimmy Robertson , in the first round of the English Open with 0: 4 against Shaun Murphy and in the qualification for the International Championship with 4: 6 against Ali Carter . In contrast, he won his first round game at the Northern Ireland Open 4-1 against Ross Muir , but was then defeated 3: 4 by Welsh Michael White . Again several defeats followed in his opening games. He lost 4-6 in the UK Championship to Mark Allen , 2-4 in the Scottish Open against Oliver Lines , in the qualification for the German Masters with 4-5 against Michael White and in the first round of the Welsh Open with 2-4 against his compatriot Tian Pengfei . After all, Chen won the first round of the shoot-out against former professional Itaro Santos , but then lost to Jimmy White . Also his last two opening games at the China Open and the Snooker World Championship with 1: 5 against Alan McManus and 7:10 against Dechawat Poomjaeng . Zhe finished the season at world number 121.

Season 2017/18

The 2017/18 season began for Chen with four opening defeats in a row. At the Riga Masters he lost 4-0 to the Latvian champion Rodion Judin and in qualifying for the China Championship 3: 5 against the Englishman Rory McLeod . He also withdrew from the Paul Hunter Classic , so that Adam Edge won without a fight and then lost in qualifying for the Indian Open 3-4 against Matthew Selt . A success for him were the World Open , where he defeated Sam Baird and Mark King with 5: 3 each and only lost in the round of 32 with 0: 5 to Mark Williams . In the following tournament, the European Masters , he reached the main round with a 4: 3 over Stuart Carrington , where he lost to Thepchaiya Un-Nooh with 1: 4. But there were numerous defeats in his opening games: At the English Open he lost 3: 4 against Mark Davis , in the qualification for the International Championship with 3: 6 against Ding Junhui , in the qualification for the Shanghai Masters with 3: 5 against Barry Hawkins , at the Northern Ireland Open with 0: 4 against Ali Carter , at the UK Championship with 1: 6 against Robert Milkins , at the Scottish Open with 2: 4 against Kyren Wilson , in the qualification for the German Masters with 3: 5 against Anthony Hamilton , at Shoot-out 22:90 on points against David Lilley , at the Welsh Open with 1: 4 against Stuart Bingham and at the Gibraltar Open with 1: 4 against Tian Pengfei . After all, he reached the main round of the China Open with a 6: 4 against Li Hang , but then lost 6: 2 to Zhou Yuelong . Chen played his last game of the season when he lost 3:10 to Liam Highfield in the first qualifying round of the World Snooker Championship . Chen finished the season in world number 106 , which was not enough for a qualification for the next season.

Try again

Chen tried to qualify through Q School. In the first tournament he lost in the first round against Indian Laxman Rawat , in the second he made it into round 4, where he was defeated by the later finalist Mitchell Mann . In the third tournament he defeated Fraser Patrick and Leo Fernandez , among others , but lost in the semifinals against Himendu Dinesh Jain .
