The Paul Hunter Classic 2016 was a snooker tournament as part of the 2016/17 season , which was held from August 24th to 28th, 2016 in the town hall in Fürth . It was the tenth edition of the tournament under the name of Paul Hunter, who died in October 2006 . After the end of the Players Tour Championship last season, it was one of two remaining Pro-Am tournaments - tournaments for professionals and amateur players - on the Main Tour . The most successful amateurs of the Paul Hunter Classic and the Gibraltar Open 2017 will get an additional qualification chance for the following professional season.
Many top players stayed away from the tournament, only 7 players from the top 16 registered. With the reigning world champion Mark Selby and his predecessor Stuart Bingham , at least the two best players at that time competed. After five years of television broadcasting, there was no more coverage on Eurosport . Only the stationary streaming cameras introduced some time ago on the Main Tour transmitted live images over the Internet for a fee.
Thepchaiya Un-Nooh from Thailand played the first maximum break of his career in the second frame of his third round game against Kurt Maflin . It was the 119th official 147 break in professional snooker and the fourth in the Paul Hunter Classic.
The defending champion Allister Carter was eliminated in round 3. The top favorite Mark Selby won the tournament for the third time after 2011 and 2012, after defeating Tom Ford 4-2 in the final.
Three women had registered for the tournament, including the reigning world champions Reanne Evans (WLBSA) and Wendy Jans (IBSF). For the first time, however, the Paul Hunter Ladies Classic took place parallel to the traditional tournament . The semi-finals and finals were held at the tables of the main tournament in the Fürth town hall. The tournament marked the start of the world ranking season for women. The winner was Reanne Evans' opponent in the World Cup, Hong Kong Chinese Ng On Yee .

Preliminary round
142 amateurs had registered for the tournament. In three rounds the field was reduced to 28 players, who then moved into the main tournament. The preliminary rounds were spread over two days and took place on Wednesday and Thursday immediately before the main tournament.
35 players came from Germany, as well as Austrian national champion Andreas Ploner and Swiss champion Tom Zimmermann. Zimmermann and most of the German players were eliminated in the opening match, Ploner had a difficult lot in round 3 with Welshman Ben Jones and lost. Young player Simon Lichtenberg and the German runner-up and ex-professional Patrick Einsle prevailed in round 3 in purely German duels and also qualified for the main tournament, as did Felix Frede , who prevailed against two opponents from the British Isles in the qualification. After 2012, three German players made it into the top 128 for the first time.
Lukas Kleckers , the only German player with professional ambitions, had reported, but reached the semi-finals of the U21 World Cup at the same time and was therefore unable to compete.

Main tournament
The main tournament with 128 participants began with the fourth round of the tournament. The top half of the seeding list played its first three rounds on Friday, August 26th, and the bottom half was at the tables on Saturday. The last four rounds from the round of 16 to the final were played on the final Sunday.
100 professional players had registered for the tournament, leaving 28 places for amateur players who had prevailed in the qualification in the two previous days.
Round 1 to the round of 16
In the upper half, Liam Highfield in particular surprised , who made it into the round of 16 with wins against Luca Brecel and Ricky Walden . The last game was only decided on black in the decision frame. Even James Cahill played a very good tournament and beat Ryan Day , but had against Mark Selby compete. The world champion had previously left no doubt about his favorite position with two clean sheet victories. But Cahill was able to force him into the decision-making frame, which began at midnight, when all other games had long since ended. It took Selby two tries and a big fight before he could finally prevail. Two "veterans" also made it to the round of 16: Jimmy White and Mark Davis . In addition, with Dominic Dale and Michael White, two Welsh nationals made it into the round of the last 16 with ease. The latter faced Chinese opponents three times, but one of them did not run. Yan Bingtao was the only Middle Kingdom player to make it to Sunday. He won the decisive frame three times, including in round 3 against defending champion Ali Carter . The first half of the round of 16 was completed by an equally sovereign Sam Baird .
Felix Frede was committed to his second Pro-Am main tournament after the Lisbon Open 2014 and took a 1-0 lead against Michael Holt . After that he gave the Englishman a persistent fight before the professional's routine clearly prevailed with 4: 1. It was similar on the second main day Simon Lichtenberg , who also took the first frame from Robbie Williams . Although the German U-16 champion from 2013 had more chances in the following frames, the Englishman's better breakbuilding decided the match. Chaotic ran the game from Patrick Einsle against Matthew Stevens . Stevens countered the German's 2: 1 connection with a maximum attempt, which ended with the missed yellow. Then Einsle won his second frame before the Welshman finished 4-2.
There was still the maximum break: Thepchaiya Un-Nooh from Thailand managed the first 147 break of his career in round 3 in the top match at table 1 against Kurt Maflin . He also clearly won the match 4-1 and reached the round of 16.
The second day was mainly the day of the qualifiers. The biggest surprise was Zack Richardson from England, who made it to the round of 16. He and his third-round opponent John Astley ensured that a game lasted almost until 1 a.m. on the second day. With Gerard Greene , a second qualifier secured progress into the Sunday games. Among other things, he defeated Stuart Bingham , second in the world rankings and one of the two top favorites of the tournament. Greene had only missed the extension of the professional status at the end of last season after a long membership in the Main Tour, as did Peter Lines , who at least made it to round 3 via qualification. His conqueror Jamie Jones became the third Welshman in the round of 16.
With Kyren Wilson and Martin Gould, two other top players were eliminated early, while Mark Allen , the third player in the tournament from the top 8 in the world rankings, completed his first day with confidence and success . With David Grace , Robbie Williams and Tom Ford , three Englishmen from the midfield of the world rankings completed the round of 16.
Sunday then meant a new start and experience usually prevailed. The two amateurs Richardson and Greene were eliminated in the second round, as were Liam Highfield and Yan Bingtao. Mark Davis, Jimmy White, Mark Selby, and Dominic Dale advanced. In the top match between Thepchaiya Un-Nooh and Mark Allen, both players took turns with the frame wins until the Thai finally won the decisive frame. Surprisingly, David Grace won 4-0 against Robbie Williams. Not so surprising was Tom Ford's quarter-finals, who is a specialist in this tournament format. He was in the last eight in nine tournaments on the Players Tour and won two of them. Jamie Jones completed the quarter-finals.

Quarter-finals to finals
In the quarter-finals, Thepchaiya Un-Nooh met David Grace, who took the momentum from the clear eighth final win and was already leading in this game by two frames. However, the Thai fought his way back and won again in the decision-making frame. In the second game there was a duel between the players who had defeated the remaining amateurs in the round of 16: Tom Ford prevailed against Jamie Jones. In the other two games there were two of the oldest tournament participants, but for whom the end of the tournament had been reached: Mark Davis at the age of 44 lost to Mark Selby, while Jimmy White was 10 years older than Dominic Dale.
Selby and Dale met in the semifinals and shared the first four frames mostly with higher 50 breaks. Then the world champion took the lead 3-2 and finally won with a contested sixth frame. Also in the second semi-final game between Ford and Un-Nooh it was 2-2 after four frames due to high breaks, Ford even had a century. He also got the contested fifth frame and then managed a second century break to reach the final.
Tom Ford and Mark Selby were two players, both from Leicester . It was only their second encounter at a world ranking tournament and Selby had to make up for something after losing the first round at the World Grand Prix earlier in the year. Nevertheless, Ford was usually the player who started offensively with the points, but unlike in the previous games, he only managed a bigger break. He was able to equalize to 2: 2 in the meantime, but then it was Selby who, with breaks of 72 and 58 points, decided the next two frames and won the tournament. For Selby it was the third success in Fürth, making him the sole record winner of the tournament. After seven PTC wins it was also his eighth win in a "small" tournament.

Paul Hunter Ladies Classic
Due to the group constellation, amateur world champion Wendy Jans met Ng On Yee in the quarter-finals . The world number two from Hong Kong prevailed and achieved the only Century Break of the Ladies Classic with 104 points. In the semifinals she had just as few problems with world number four Maria Catalano as the number 1 Reanne Evans with Latvian Tatjana Vasiljeva. This led to the relaunch of the duel from the World Cup final, in which this time Ng On Yee got the upper hand and became the tournament winner. The best German participant was the 5-time German champion Diana Stateczny , who made it to the quarter-finals, where she lost to the world number seven Vasiljeva.
