The Paul Hunter Classic 2015 (also European Tour 2015/16 - Event 2 ) was a snooker tournament that took place from August 26th to August 30th, 2015 in Fürth . It was the second event of the Players Tour Championship 2015/16 and the European Tour . This made it an official minor ranking tournament on the Main Tour in the 2015/16 season . Defending champion was Mark Allen , who lost his opening match against Sanderson Lam that year .
The Englishman Ali Carter won the tournament with a 4-3 victory in the final against his compatriot Shaun Murphy . For Carter it was the first ever victory in a PTC tournament. For Murphy it was the third final appearance at the Paul Hunter Classic, he drew level with Mark Selby , but failed to be the first player to win the tournament three times.
With Ding Junhui , Neil Robertson and Ronnie O'Sullivan , three of the top 5 players did not participate this year. Apart from that, the best players in the world rankings were almost entirely represented in Fürth.

Preliminary round
244 players signed up for the tournament. In three elimination rounds, the 136 amateur players among them played for 20 free places in the main tournament. All games were played in the best of 7 frames mode.
The biggest surprise of the qualification was the French number one Stéphane Ochoiski , who was able to play in the main round of a PTC tournament for the first time. Although he played in the main tournament in two PTC tournaments in Germany in 2010, he was automatically qualified because no more than 128 players had entered each time. Of the 43 German starters, only the former professional player Patrick Einsle survived the qualification. With the exception of Paul Schopf, all Austrian starters lost their opening matches, and two out of five Swiss starters made it into the third round. Dennis Furrer and Alexander Ursenbacher , who had been a professional the previous season, both failed because of their English opponents. Two players from Poland made it into the main tournament: Kacper Filipiak , who also had professional experience, and junior player Mateusz Baranowski, who had already come this far earlier in the year at the Gdynia Open at home . Except for the young Maltese player Brian Cini , all other qualified players came from the British Isles.

Main round
The 108 registered professionals were set for the main tournament. In the two days before, the amateur players had played 20 qualifiers, adding the field to the 128 players in the first round. The top half of the schedule took place on Friday, August 28, its first three rounds, the bottom half was on Saturday. From the last sixteen to the final, the game was played on the final Sunday.
The first qualified Frenchman Stéphane Ochoiski was allowed to play his opening game on the TV table and was able to turn a frame in his favor against Stephen Maguire , but still lost clearly against the top 16 player. The ex-professionals Einsle and Filipiak also didn't have much to oppose their opponents from the midfield of the world rankings. Only Baranowski was lucky that his opponent did not start and he got into round two without a fight, where Michael Holt was the last stop. Of the 20 qualifiers, only the Englishman Nico Elton managed a surprise by beating Robert Milkins, a player from the top 20.
The biggest surprise of the first day was the end of Barry Hawkins against number 54 in the world rankings Kyren Wilson , who then also beat John Higgins . The narrow 3: 4 defeat of the defending champion Mark Allen against the Main Tour newcomer Sanderson Lam in round 1 came as a surprise. The former Asian champion Thor Chuan was able to set an exclamation point for the first time in his second year as a professional and, among other things, reached the final day with a 4-0 victory over Liang Wenbo . Like Shaun Murphy, he only released two frames in three games. Only Mark King survived the first day without a frame loss .
On the second day, Ali Carter reached the round of 16 in the second half with only one frame loss. The biggest surprise of the day was the victory of the young Scotsman Scott Donaldson , previously on number 77 in the world rankings, against world number one Mark Selby and with the subsequent victory against Martin Gould he also made it to the last 16.
On Sunday morning, almost all outsiders were left behind, only Stuart Carrington's win over Mark Davis came unexpectedly. In the quarterfinals, however, he drew the short straw against Shaun Murphy. He became the tournament favorite as the last top ten player after Judd Trump surprisingly lost to Michael Holt . In a purely English semi-final, Holt was only able to defy Ali Carter, who was behind him in the world rankings, up to 2: 2 and then narrowly lost two frames in a row. Murphy was able to defeat Mark King, who had been playing confidently until then, in the decision-making frame. King had only lost a single frame in the tournament before and had already led 3-0 against Murphy with a 60s and two century breaks before the world number six could turn the game around with a show of strength. He also benefited from the fact that Mark King let his shirt slip out of his pants throw him out of focus.

final
In the final, Ali Carter presented in the first frame and was then able to extend his lead to 3: 1. But as in the semifinals, Murphy fought his way back and forced the decision frame in the sixth frame with the black ball. There Carter proved to be nervous and was able to secure the tournament victory with a break of 95 points. For Ali Carter it was the first tournament victory after surviving cancer the year before and the first victory at a PTC tournament at all. For Tatiana Woollaston, wife of player Ben Woollaston , it was the first professional final as a referee.
