Stuart Bingham (born May 21, 1976 in Basildon ) is an English snooker player .

Career

Bingham celebrated his first major successes in 1996 when he won the IBSF World Amateur Championship and the English Amateur Championship . At first he could not hold himself on the main tour until he consolidated his position in 1999 with the quarter-finals of the Welsh Open . At the third event of the UK Tour in 1999 he played his first maximum break . At the Snooker World Cup in 2000, he defeated Stephen Hendry in the first round and moved into the round of 16.

He also showed solid performances in the 2005/06 season . He reached the quarterfinals of the Grand Prix and the UK Championship . He also qualified for the Masters , where he managed another maximum break in the qualifying round. He is the eighth player to have scored a second break of 147 points in a professional tournament.

In the 2006/07 season it went less well, he again missed qualifying for the World Cup. In 2007/2008, however, he took part in all seven ranking tournaments and only lost his opening game once. At the Snooker World Cup in 2008 he reached the last sixteen.

At the Australian Goldfields Open 2011 he reached the semi-finals of a ranking tournament for the first time after 16 years as a professional. There he prevailed against Shaun Murphy and met in the final on Mark Williams , number one in the world rankings. Bingham was able to turn a 5: 8 deficit with four frame wins in a row into a 9: 8 victory and celebrate his first major tournament victory.

In the final of the Wuxi Classic 2012 , Bingham managed the third maximum break of his career in a match against Ricky Walden , but he lost the game 4:10. In the absence of a few professionals, he won two of the three Asian PTC tournaments in 2012 , making him the top 10 of the world rankings for the first time. In February 2013 he led the final of the Welsh Open against Stephen Maguire 7: 5 and he even had a promising position to make it 8: 5, but still lost the game 8: 9.

In March 2014, he won his third title on the PTC series at the Dongguan Open . In the final he defeated Liang Wenbo 4-1.

In the 2014/15 snooker season , Bingham started 12th in the world rankings. His first notable success was getting into the quarterfinals of the Australian Goldfields Open . At the Shanghai Masters , he reached the final of a full ranking tournament for the fourth time after beating defending champion Ding Junhui . The 10-3 final win over Mark Allen marked his second ranking tournament win on the Main Tour.

At the end of October 2014 he won the Haining Open with a 4-0 final win over his compatriot Oliver Lines , it was his fourth title in a PTC tournament.

On May 4, 2015, he won the final of the 2015 World Snooker Championship against the 2005 World Champion, Shaun Murphy , at 6:15 p.m. This made him, 17 days before his 39th birthday, the third oldest world champion of the Crucible era after Ray Reardon and John Spencer . With a break of 145 in the quarterfinals against Ronnie O'Sullivan , he also won the prize for the highest break of the tournament, which he had to share with Neil Robertson . After the world championship, he reached his highest position in the world snooker rankings as second.

Throughout the entire 2015/16 season , he was able to hold onto position two in the world rankings . At the World Grand Prix 2016 , the final of the World Cup final was repeated, this time Bingham lost 9:10 to Shaun Murphy . Stuart Bingham did not make any further finals this season. However, he reached the semi-finals at the Shanghai Masters 2015 , the Gdynia Open 2015 and the Masters 2016 . At the Snooker World Championship 2016 the curse of the crucible was confirmed , Stuart Bingham could not defend his world title and lost to Ali Carter 9:10 in the first round . After the World Cup he was inducted into the Snooker Hall of Fame for his career achievements , along with his compatriot Rex Williams and the Thai man Sindhu Pulsirivong .

Bingham had to wait almost two years for his first ranking tournament victory after winning the 2015 World Snooker Championship. At the Welsh Open 2017 he defeated Judd Trump in a decider with 9: 8 frames in February 2017 .

Blocking

In autumn 2017, he was banned from participating in competitions by the WPBSA for six months, including three on probation, due to unauthorized bets (on his own games) . The ban began on October 27, 2017 and ended on January 26, 2018. In its ruling, the WPBSA underlined that Bingham had not committed any match-fixing as he had only bet on his own games and his win. Nevertheless, the association was disappointed about the unsporting and illegal behavior of the ex-world champion.

After the lock

Shortly after the suspension was over, Bingham was able to win a 6-2 win over Jimmy White in qualifying for the China Open . At the 2018 World Grand Prix , Bingham was able to retract a 4-2 win over Mark Williams , but then lost to Anthony McGill in the second round . He was unable to defend his title at the Welsh Open in 2018 after beating Matthew Stevens 1: 4 in the third round. At the Gibraltar Open 2018 , Bingham made it to the quarter-finals, where he had to admit defeat to Cao Yupeng 4-0. Due to his ranking position, Bingham was able to play at the Romanian Masters 2018 , where he lost 8:10 in the final to Ryan Day . At the China Open 2018, Bingham was able to defeat Matthew Stevens and Ricky Walden 6: 5 before sending Graeme Dott home 6: 2. In the quarterfinals he lost to Neil Robertson by a whitewash . In the first round of the 2018 World Snooker Championship , Bingham surprisingly lost 7:10 to Jack Lisowski . He finished the English Open 2018 as the winner and thus won his fifth title in a ranking tournament. In the semifinals of the UK Championship 2018 he was defeated by Mark Allen . At the China Open , Bingham had the 5th maximum break of his career in the round of 32  .
