Stephen Maguire (born March 13, 1981 in Glasgow ) is a Scottish snooker player .
Career
1998-2004
Maguire made his professional debut in 1998. His first major successes include victories at the IBSF World Championship in 2000 and 2004 at the European Open ranked tournament in Malta . His greatest success at first, however, was winning the 2004 UK Championship in York . This moved him to third place in the world rankings in the 2004/05 season .
2005-2007
After a disappointing 2005/06 season , he fell back to 9th place. Another tournament victory he succeeded in late 2007 at the Northern Ireland Trophy . At the following UK Championship he reached the final again, but had to admit defeat Ronnie O'Sullivan with 3:10.
2007–2012
On March 29, 2008, he managed his second maximum break in the semi-finals of the China Open . He then secured the tournament victory with a 10: 9 win over Shaun Murphy . This made him the second most successful player of the 2007/08 season behind O'Sullivan , and at the beginning of the following season he was second in the official world rankings for the first time in his career.
In spring 2010 the British police investigated him on suspicion of betting fraud. For his game in December 2008 against Jamie Burnett (against him was also determined) there were unusually many bets on the result that actually came about (9: 3 for Maguire). Maguire and Burnett denied the allegations, and in August 2010 the allegations were finally dropped.
As number 8 in the world rankings , he knocked out Chinese Liang Wenbo 5-2 at the beginning of the season in the preliminary round of the Wuxi Classic , but then lost just 4: 5 to Ding Junhui in the quarter-finals . In the first major tournament of the season, the Australian Goldfields Open , he lost his first round match against Ken Doherty 2-5 . In the following Shanghai Masters he did not get past Anthony Hamilton (4: 5) beyond the opening round.
At PTC Event 2 he was eliminated in the second round with 2: 4 against John Higgins . In the quarter-finals of the third event he had to admit defeat to Stephen Lee 1: 4 at the end of August . At the PTC event no. 5 he lost in the first round 2: 4 against old master Peter Ebdon . At the Warsaw Classic Maguire made it to the round of 16 and was knocked out 3: 4 against Neil Robertson . In a PTC tournament he then lost to Ronnie O'Sullivan. When the world rankings were first updated on October 3, he slipped one place down.
He confirmed his rather mediocre form with a 2-4 defeat against 83rd place Thai Dechawat Poomjaeng at the Alex Higgins Trophy in round 5. At the UK Championship , the eventual tournament winner Judd Trump defeated him 6-3 in the quarter-finals after Maguire had defeated reigning world champion John Higgins 6-4 in the round of 16. In early 2012 he won the FFB Snooker Open 2012 . After good performances at the German Masters 2012 in Berlin, he met Ronnie O'Sullivan in the final, against whom he drew the short straw 7: 9.
Thanks to his increase in performance, he was able to climb one place in the world rankings after cut-off point 3 . At the beginning of February in the Chinese Haikou held World Open he lost in the first round the surprise player of the tournament, Robert Milkins , 3: 5th At the PTC Grand Finals in Galway , Ireland , he made it to the semi-finals after victories over Mark Davis and Ricky Walden , but suffered a 4-0 defeat against Neil Robertson. At the China Open in Beijing he then reached the final, in which he narrowly failed to Peter Ebdon with 9:10.
Maguire reached the semi-finals of the 2012 World Snooker Championship , in which he had to admit defeat to Ali Carter 12:17. He had previously beaten Stephen Hendry 2:13. Hendry then announced his retirement from active sport.
From 2012
In July 2012 he won the first tournament of the PTC series in the UK with a 4-3 final win over Jack Lisowski . In August 2012 Maguire reached the final of the Players Tour Championship 2012/13 - Event 2 , but had to admit defeat Martin Gould 3-4. In February 2013 he defeated Stuart Bingham 9: 8 in the final of the Welsh Open , winning a title in a world ranking tournament for the first time since March 2008.
In September 2014 he won the 6-Red World Championship with an 8-7 final victory over Ricky Walden . In December he won the Lisbon Open , in the final he defeated the Englishman Matthew Selt 4-2. At the German Masters 2015 , Maguire reached the semi-finals, but had to admit defeat to Mark Selby 2: 6 .
At the Shanghai Masters 2016 he managed the third maximum break of his career.
He qualified for the 2017 World Cup. In the main round he was only defeated in the quarterfinals by Barry Hawkins with 9:13.
He also qualified for the 2018 Snooker World Championship , but lost to Ronnie O'Sullivan 7:10 in the main round after a 4-0 lead .
