Wildcard round
In the wildcard round, the Australian brothers Steve and James Mifsud were originally supposed to compete against the two qualifiers who were worst placed in the world rankings. After the cancellations of Dott and O'Sullivan, the games were lapsed, all four players went straight to the finals.
Final round
The biggest surprise of the opening round was the defeat of top seeded John Higgins , who lost to Englishman Matthew Selt . For Selt, it was the first time ever that he had made it through the top 32 round of a ranked tournament. He then defeated Stephen Hendry before losing to Shaun Murphy .
For four other players from the top ten, the end also came early: Ding Junhui , Judd Trump and Stephen Maguire said goodbye in round one. Local hero Neil Robertson won at the start, but then lost to number 30 in the world, Dominic Dale , albeit in a very close match. At the beginning of the tournament, Stephen Maguire was defeated by the only Irishman in the field, Ken Doherty , who then defeated Mark Selby , who was seeded three in the quarter-finals . After a long time, Doherty, who had to fight for his place in the top 32 last year, once again reached the semi-finals of a major tournament. There he was clearly defeated by world number one Mark Williams with 2: 6.
In the second semifinals Shaun Murphy met Stuart Bingham , who had defeated Ding Junhui at the beginning and moved into the semi-finals for the first time in his long career with his quarter-final victory over Mark Allen . Bingham, who recently narrowly missed the top 16 in the world rankings and thus among the automatically placed players, was also able to defeat the world number seven 6-2.
The Englishman opened the final with a 139 break, the third highest of the tournament. It remained the only century of the lot. After that, a balanced afternoon session developed that ended 4: 4. In the evening Mark Williams got off to a better start and he moved away to 7: 4. If the score was 8: 5, the Welshman would have had to win another frame, but Bingham found his way back to his game and was able to equalize to 8: 8. In the decisive frame, a risky double with an open table brought him onto the road to victory. Although he showed his nerve again, Williams also missed his chance to turn the game around, and so Bingham finally achieved the first victory in his 16-year professional career at a world ranking tournament.
