final

Englishman Tony Knowles had made it to the semi-finals last year , but lost to Bill Werbeniuk there . This year he had reached the semi-finals with victories over Dennis Taylor and Jimmy White , in which he secured a place in the final with a clear 6-0 White wash over Eddie Charlton . In this he met his compatriot John Virgo , who had moved into the final with victories over Doug Mountjoy , Willie Thorne and Tony Meo .

Knowles got into the game well and took a 2-0 lead before Virgo caught up with him by winning the next two frames. But after Knowles had managed to restore his old lead of two frames, his opponent was only able to shorten it to 4: 3 before Knowles could usually clearly win the following three frames to 7: 3 victory.
