Career

Beginnings as an amateur

In 1964 Morgan, then still Irish, defeated Maurice Gill in the final of the Northern Irish Snooker Championship . In 1967 he won against Jack Rodgers in the final of the Irish Snooker Championship . A year later he took part in the snooker amateur world championship in Australia and survived the group stage with three wins and one loss to Mohammed Lafir , but was defeated 3: 8 in the subsequent semi-finals by the Englishman David Taylor . For the 1970/71 season he became a professional player for the first time.

First professional years

Morgan, who had meanwhile accepted Australian citizenship, played his first professional games as part of the Australian Professional Championship and defeated Rex King and Norman Squire , among others, within the group , but lost to Warren Simpson and Eddie Charlton . Shortly thereafter, he took part in the World Snooker Championship taking place in Australia , but retired in the group stage with defeats to Ray Reardon , John Pulman and Gary Owen and a victory over eventual runner-up Warren Simpson. Then he lost his professional status again.

In the following two years Morgan took part as one of numerous amateurs in the tournaments of the Australian Professional Championship: In 1971 he lost in the semifinals to Warren Simpson, in the next edition in the same round against Gary Owen.

The following year Morgan became a professional again, but he lost his opening game at the Australian Professional Championship against Warren Simpson. He then defeated the Canadian Cliff Thorburn 8: 4 at the World Snooker Championship and then lost to Graham Miles 7:15 .

At the beginning of the 1974/75 season Morgan reached the semifinals of the Australian Professional Championship with a victory over Ian Anderson and lost there to Eddie Charlton. At the end of the season he lost his opening game against Cliff Thorburn with 6:15 at the World Snooker Championship . Then he lost his professional status again.

First place on the world rankings

As early as the 1976/77 season , Morgan became a professional again and was immediately placed in 21st place in the newly introduced snooker world rankings. He reached the final of the Australian Professional Championship with wins over Ron Mares and Warren Simpson , but gave it to Eddie Charlton without a fight . At the World Professional Matchplay Championship , organized by Charlton shortly thereafter , Morgan defeated two later world champions, Dennis Taylor and Alex Higgins , before losing to Charlton himself in the semifinals 18:19. In terms of world rankings, he lost four places.

At the start of the following season , Morgan moved into the final of the Australian Professional Championship with wins over Ian Anderson , Warren Simpson and Philip Tarrant , where he was defeated by Eddie Charlton 21:25. At the end of the season he was defeated by the Englishman David Taylor 7: 9 at the World Snooker Championship , which slipped him by one place on the world rankings.

In the 1978/79 season Morgan took part only in the group stage of the Australian Professional Championship and lost 6-8 to Ian Anderson. Nevertheless, he only lost two places in the world rankings.

Loss of world rankings

In the 1979/80 season Morgan took part only in the World Snooker Championship , where he reached the main round with a victory over Paul Thornley and failed there with 0: 9 to Steve Davis . Nevertheless, he improved on the world rankings by one place to the 27th place in the world rankings. In the next season he only took part in the snooker world championship, but lost in the final qualifying round 8: 9 against the Scot Eddie Sinclair . At the end of the season he also lost his world rankings.

Also in the 1981/82 season he only took part in the World Snooker Championship and lost after defeating David Greaves against Silvino Francisco with 1: 9 in the final qualifying round. In the following season he also took part in the Professional Players Tournament , where he lost his opening game against Bill Werbeniuk . At the World Snooker Championship he managed to beat Pascal Burke before losing to Graham Miles .

Another loss of world rankings

In the 1983/84 season Morgan again took part in significantly more tournaments. He lost his opening game at the Australian Masters against Eddie Charlton and moved into the round of 32 with wins over Jack Fitzmaurice and Fred Davis , where he was defeated by John Spencer . He also lost to David Taylor at the Professional Players Tournament after beating Matt Gibson in the round of 64 , before beating Mike Darrington and Mike Watterson at the Classic to lose to Eddie Sinclair in the round of 48 . He then reached the group stage of the International Masters before ending the season with an 8:10 opener defeat by Wayne Sanderson in qualifying for the World Snooker Championship . On the world rankings he was led in the following season on the 58th place.

The next season began for Morgan with an opening defeat at the Australian Masters , this time with 2: 4 against Kirk Stevens . He then lost in the semi-finals of the Australian Professional Championship to Eddie Charlton and then gave up three opening games without a fight. At the end of the season he lost in qualifying for the World Snooker Championship with 3:10 against Bob Chaperon . On the world rankings, he slipped to rank 75.

In the 1985/86 season , Morgan took part in only three tournaments: After an opening defeat at the Australian Masters against Willie Thorne , he lost in the semifinals of the Australian Professional Championship against Eddie Charlton, before losing to Eddie Sinclair in qualifying for the World Snooker Championship at the end of the season . On the world rankings, he slipped to 111th place.

The following season started with defeats at the Australian Masters and the Australian Professional Championship , before he gave up his match in qualifying for the Snooker World Championship against Gino Rigitano due to illness at the end of the season . As a result, he lost ten more places on the world rankings.

During the 1987/88 season Morgan took part in only two tournaments, but lost both at the Australian Masters against Joe Johnson and at the Australian Professional Championship against Sam Frangie his opening games. At the end of the season he lost his world rankings again.

Last professional years

In the 1988/89 season Morgan played only one game in the Australian Professional Championship , which he lost 3-5 to Greg Jenkins ; He gave up two more games without a fight. After he did not play a single game in the following season, he lost the only game of the 1990/91 season with 7:10 against Paul Thornley as part of the 1991 World Snooker Championship . Because of this, however, he was ranked 163rd in the world in the following season.

In the 1991/92 season Morgan registered for ten tournaments, but gave up all games without a fight, which he again lost his world rankings. In the next season he was still officially professional, but played no more games before he finally lost his professional status at the end of the 1992/93 season .
