The Australian Professional Championship 1977 was a professional snooker tournament in the context of the 1977/78 season without influence on the world rankings and in function of the national professional championship of Australia. The tournament without prize money or sponsors was held from the beginning of September to the 30th of the same month in the Golden Bowl Sports Center in the Australian city of Melbourne . For the ninth time in a row and for the twelfth time in total, Eddie Charlton won the tournament, defeating Paddy Morgan 25:19 in the final. Morgan meanwhile played the tournament's highest break with a 119 break .
Tournament course
A total of eight players took part in the tournament, each of whom met a different one of these players in the first round. While the winners of the games advanced to the third round, the losers played a different loser in a second round. The winners of the second round games finally met the losers of the third round games in a fourth round, while the winners of the latter round advanced to the semi-finals. In this they met one of the winners of the fourth round before the winners of the semi-finals battled for the title in the final. The first, second and fourth round were played in the best of 15 frames mode , while the third round was played in the best of 29 frames mode . Finally, the semi-finals were played in the best of 37 frames mode before the final was capped at 49 frames.

final
The local hero Eddie Charlton had only missed the final or a place in the top two places in the first edition of the tournament in 1963 and lost it for the last time in 1968 against Warren Simpson . In this edition he met in the final on Paddy Morgan , who had already reached the final last year and had given up there against Charlton without a fight. Neither player had lost a single game during the tournament so far. While Charlton had reached the final with mostly clear victories, Morgan was able to show only slightly narrower victories.
No exact results have been reported from the final itself. While Charlton played a 102 break over a maximum of 49 frames during the game, Morgan managed a 109 and a 119 break, so that all of the century breaks of the tournament were played in the final. In the end, Charlton won 25:19 and won the tournament for the twelfth time.
